Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and if you are in the watersports world, you know it is also time to tune into The Nautique Masters Water Ski and Wakeboard Tournament presented by GM Marine. An event steeped in tradition, receiving an invitation to compete at Robin Lake at Callaway Gardens can be the pinnacle of one’s athletic career. To win a Masters champion ring can cement one’s name in the history books.

The two wakeboarding athletes that came out on top had two very different experiences with the Masters over the years, however they each overcame very disruptive injuries and surgeries to put themselves on top.

Meagan Ethell captured her 7th Masters title marking one of her most memorable victories. A successful shoulder surgery, rehabilitation and a year’s worth of work paid off when she reminded the wakeboard world that the Queen is not ready to give up her throne. Fending off the up-and-coming competitors is not getting any easier as Mary Morgan Howell, Eugenia de Armas, and Jamie Lopina improve their level of riding with each event.

On the men’s side, one of most likable riders in the sport came through with his first Masters win. Italian Massi Piffaretti combined his unique approach to the sport with his technical proficiency and landed a run full of rewinds, 900’s and mobe 5’s. Piffaretti has only received the invite to compete at Callaway Gardens a handful of times, but capitalized on his new approach to contests this year.

“My crew and I all have the tricks to take the win. It is all about who has it on the day” said Piffaretti. It was his day for the win and his day of reckoning as he had his first boat contest win since his 2 and a half year battling a serious injury. “With all of my time off I really focused on the mental side of competing. I used to be such a head case in contests, but I realized it is all about the love of the sport and focused on why we are all out here.”

I’m so thankful for the incredible support of Nautique & Callaway Gardens for continually hosting this event.” said Whitney. “Skiing behind the Nautique 200 with Les Todd behind the wheel gave me the confidence to go out and do my thing, and let God take care of the details. What an amazing Masters it was this year.”

In the Pro Men Slalom Finals, Team Nautique athlete Nate Smith (USA) found himself in a run-off with Will Asher (GBR) for the 58th Masters title. It was Nate’s day though, as he was able to comfortably take the win during the run-off against Will. “I could not be more excited to finish off this weekend with my fourth Masters title! Tarah Mikicich (USA) grabbed second on the podium with Larisa Morales (MEX) in close third, and Raimi Rutledge (USA) rounding out fourth place.

The PCM, GM Marine powered Super Air Nautique G23 wake was in perfect form once again at Robin Lake during the Men’s Wakeboard event. This year, it was Aussie ripper Cory Teunissen (AUS) taking advantage of the best event of the year landing two double flips and a 1080 to seal the win. Harley Clifford (AUS), another beneficiary of the epic conditions that the Masters provides had an unfortunate bobble but came back to grab second on the podium. Nautique team athlete Mike Dowdy (USA) laid down two double flips as well, but a couple crashes led him to the 3rd place spot with fellow Nautique teammate Tony Iacconi (AUS) right behind him claiming 4th.

During the Jump portion of the event, the Nautique athletes put on a clinic behind the Ski Nautique 200. Jacinta Carroll (AUS) bested the Women’s field, jumping 186 feet and taking yet another Masters title. Regina Jacques (USA) came in second after jumping 178 feet, with Marion Ellis (FRA) and Lauren Morgan (USA) in third and fourth.

The story of the day though, was Ryan Dodd (CAN) and his first and only jump needed to win the event. With the world’s best junior waterski and wakeboard athletes on the water, the day was met with great conditions that saw incredible performances from the future pros of the watersports world.

The PCM, GM Marine Engine Technology powered Ski Nautique 200 pulled Patricio Font and Brooke Baldwin to Junior Masters championships in the Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s trick ski disciplines. Patricio Font (MEX) scored a 9,460 behind the Ski 200 while Brooke Baldwin (USA) won the women’s division with 7,630 points. Nautique team athlete Paige Rini came in second place in the Junior Women’s division with a score of 6,640.

Nautique team athlete Paige Rini (USA) followed her in second place when she ran 2@38-off. During the Junior Men’s Slalom final, it was Ryan Canepa (USA) showcasing his talents and receiving a Junior Masters title after he ran 0.5@39.5-off.

In Junior Women’s Jump, great conditions along with the legendary Ski Nautique 200 pull saw Dominique Grondin-Allard (CAN) jump an incredible distance of 142 feet (43.2m) to win the 25th Junior Masters title. During the Junior Men’s Jump, it was Louis Duplan-Fribourg (FRA) with a distance of 185 feet (56.5m) to win the Junior Men’s Jump portion of the event.

When it was all said and done, it was team Nautique athlete Paige Rini taking the overall Junior Women Masters title. With a couple second place finishes, Paige had an increedible day of skiing to earn the victory. “The Masters is my favorite tournament of the year,” said Paige. “This is my fourth year competing and to win the overall is a dream come true. Thank you to Nautique for making this event so amazing every year!”

On the Junior Men front, Louis Duplan-Fribourg took the overall win after getting on the podium in all 3 disciplines. His first-place in jump, third-place in slalom and second in trick was enough to stake his claim as the 25th overall Junior Masters champion.

The award-winning Super Air Nautique G23 set up perfect wakes for the Junior Men’s Wakeboard riders, and after the smoke cleared it was Guenther Oka (USA) taking his first-ever Junior Masters victory. After laying down two perfect passes to land on top including a Pete Rose and a switch Pete Rose, Guenther found himself on top of the rest of the field.
