Max Van Helvoort can ride a board, period. Wakeboard or snowboard, doesn’t matter. It’s that reason that GoPro filmer and videographer Chris Rogers wanted to team up with the Dutchman and create “Standing Sideways.”

Whether on water (frozen or melted), Van Helvoort is insanely talented with a smooth-flowing style and bags of tricks that make you saw “WOW!” (or some other expletives we can’t share here). The duo traveled around the world over six months to create this epic piece, from CWC in the Philippines to the Dolomites in Italy, from OWC in Florida to the Turks and Caicos. Take a look and enjoy. Then take another look. And another. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Max Van Helvoort and videographer extraordinaire Chris Rogers have been hard at work over the past year to create what is surely going to be an insane video. Here’s the teaser for “Standing Sideways,” and we’re not even sure what to expect, because this teaser is packed full of nothing but pure, beautiful, jaw-dropping craziness.

The GoPro camera has changed the way we capture and watch wakeboarding. With the launch of the new HERO7 Black, GoPro decided to create a challenge of epic proportions. The Million Dollar Challenge tasked users (pro and amateur alike) to send clips shot on their HERO7 Black cameras. Winning clips selected for the final video would split the $1 million prize. When it was all said and done 56 winners were chosen out of over 25,000 clips submitted, and one selection featured the riding/filming combo of Tyler Higham and acclaimed GoPro shooter Chris Rogers.

On being selected as a winner and having wakeboarding featured in the giant project, Tyler had this to say: “Chris and I headed to the Turks and Caicos last month and met up with the Wake to Wake TC crew. We spent a few days riding the insanely clear water of the Bahamas working on getting cool shots with the GoPro HERO7 Black cameras. GoPro wasn’t looking for the most insane or jaw-dropping stuff – the whole video is a cool mix of everything. There are some crazy stunts, and then cool, everyday life shots like a kid at the beach having fun. We got some shots of me riding: one mute heel 7 and one just cruising behind a jet ski in the clear water that ended up making the cut. The Wake to Wake TC crew was also featured with some shots of the famous shipwreck near their spot and a kiteboarder cruising past their boat and grabbing a GoPro out of Chris’ hands while it was filming. I’m really stoked that a few clips from that trip made it into the final video and that wakeboarding got to be part of something as big as the Million Dollar Challenge!”

GoPro Hero5 Black GoPro

Ever since their launch in 2004, GoPro has been the industry leader in hand-held action cameras. For over a decade GoPro has been improving each model from its last, and the HERO5, both the Black and the Session, are no exception. As GoPro puts it themselves, “Simply the best GoPro, ever.”

First and foremost, the most important feature of any camera is image quality. The HERO5 Black shoots stills 12 MP/30 FPS, burst, time lapse, and films 4K30/1440P80/1080P120. It also has the ability to shoot stills in RAW format, so when it comes to image quality, this is the most advanced GoPro by far. That’s a crazy concept considering that GoPro was able to shave $100 off the price of the previous model, meaning you can get your hands on the HERO5 Black for $400.

The most notable exterior feature of the camera is the touchscreen on the back. This is where a single swipe can bring you to intuitive menus that allow you to adjust anything, such as changing from photo mode to video mode as well as more advanced settings like adjusting the ISO. The single record button on the top of the camera is also worth noting. Whether the camera is on or off, a single touch will make the GoPro start recording. Gone are the days of missing that shot that you weren’t quite ready for. With the HERO5, it now only takes a moment’s notice to be prepared and recording.

Of all the new features on the HERO5, the most badass and most practical for anyone in watersports is that it’s waterproof up to 33 feet. That means that as long as you aren’t going any deeper than that, no case is required. This allows for greater sound quality on the water as well. One piece of advice though for the HERO5 Black – make sure to lock your touchscreen while in use. Those water droplets on the screen have a tendency of adjusting the settings on you.

If it being waterproof is its coolest new feature, its voice activation has to be a close second. You never realize how many times you are reaching for buttons on a helmet cam until you no longer have to do it. Simply say, “GoPro record,” and it will do as told. This also saves you from having to edit around unwanted footage between tricks. A bonus feature of the voice activation really comes to life when editing in the GoPro editing suite. The HERO5 has the ability to recognize interjections while you record with it. That means next time you’re recording and let out a “YEWWW” or a “Hell yeah!” it will bookmark it and let you know to look at those clips first for bangers.

If you want a camera that shoots almost the same quality but need it to be half the size, the HERO5 Session is what you’re looking for. It’s just as waterproof and has the voice controls as well but ditches the touch screen on the back. There is truly a beauty in simplicity on this camera. With just a single button and a red light to let you know it’s recording, this no-nonsense design makes it easy to get that up-close and personal shot. If you wish to adjust the standard settings, don’t worry. All the adjustability that you get from the HERO5 Black can be done on the Session through an iPhone app that connects via Bluetooth.

Chris Rogers, a travel & action sports filmmaker and a member of the GoPro family, spends the majority of his time traveling the world and capturing some of the most insane videos every step of the way. Before gaining quite a bit of fame in the film and travel worlds, Chris was a huge wakeboarding enthusiast and all-around badass rider. After getting hurt in a skiing accident, he started taking photos and videos of his friends wakeboarding and fell in love with it. Now he gets paid to travel the world, shooting videos and licensing them out to GoPro and other companies. Recently though, he returned to his roots of wakeboarding, meeting up with Cory Teunissen, Gordon Harrison and Cobe France here in Orlando. This video he created captures the next level riding from these three riders as well as the behind-the-scenes of all the settings used in the making of this video and the images below. Take notes!

This backpack is easily the most thought through bag I’ve even used. Normally, there’s a few zipper pockets for general “stuff” or the occasional smartphone sleeve or water bottle holder if it is a basic backpack, or you can get all serious and buy a photographer specific camera bag that’s built for a DSLR with massive battery packs and additional lenses, etc. etc. — which can get cumbersome and expensive in a hurry. The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack successfully bridges the gap between the two types of backpacks — with an emphasis on GoPro compatibility. It’s downright impressive, to say the least. It perfectly stores and protects everything in a convenient size from your DSLR, GoPro and accessories or even just a wad of clothes and a sack lunch.

Let’s dive into a few of the features so you can get a better feel for it:

  • Storage Compartments — Let’s start with the first thing you’d go to if you had the bag in person — geek out over the pockets! Or maybe that’s just me, ha-ha.
GoPro Back Packs

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase Wakeboarding Magazine
  1. As soon as I started exploring the compartments, it became apparent that there’s one main compartment that makes up the main body of the pack. The best part about it is that there are two different access points. The first is the pad that rests against your back. That entire panel opens up so you can access everything all at once. And due to the rigid geometric frame of the outer shell, when you set the pack down with the back pad facing up, it rests in a very stable position. Even without contents the pack sits stable on the counter while you organize your gear without drooping or flopping over. The internal compartments are segregated by velcro dividers like you’d see in a typical camera bag — only these ones don’t come detached or move around like the ones that I’ve seen in other packs, and I’ve been testing this pack for over a month now without a problem. This main storage compartment also has a sleeve on the main door itself that comfortably fits your iPad, keeping it closest to your body and protected from the majority of heavy drops.
GoPro Back Packs

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase

  1. This main compartment also has a second access point in one of the side pockets — which might be my favorite feature on this thing. The other side pocket is a normal pocket, with a small, clear, zippered, water-resistant internal panel built into it. When you want quick access to your compartments but aren’t in a place that you can or want to set your bag down to dig through it, the common thing to do is to sling the bag around your side, leaving one strap on your shoulder. This puts the pack on it’s side, giving you direct access to one of the two side pockets.
GoPro Back Packs

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase Wakeboarding Magazine
  1. The top compartment is pretty intriguing as well. It too has a segmented velcro panel and a neoprene panel to keep everything in it’s place. At first I thought this was just for carry items like your phone, wallet, keys, etc. But when I looked into it, I learned that it’s actually a compartment built for your DSLR! Which fits perfectly and remains well protected. Don’t get me wrong. If you’re looking for a professional DSLR camera bag to store multiple lenses, battery packs, external hard drives, and other photo equipment, you might overwhelm this pack. But if you’re a lighter traveler who’s main focus is your GoPro, but would also like to throw your DSLR in there too, then this is the perfect bag for that. If I’m ever doing some serious traveling and want some options besides just my phone and my GoPro gear, it’s nice to have the option to being my Nikon along for the journey. Most GoPro packs don’t include your DSLR and most professional camera bags are overkill for your GoPro. I’ve never really seen another camera bag that fits as well into this category. Well done, InCase!
GoPro Back Packs

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase Wakeboarding Magazine
  1. This one took me a while to find. On the very bottom of the pack, there’s a small zipper pocket that reveals a rain fly that fits as a water-repellant covering for your back pack! Have you ever been out in the elements and then, all of a sudden a storm pops up and you find yourself getting soaked, only to be stressed out about keeping your camera gear dry within your bag. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a trash back to cover your back pack with. If you’re the proud owner of the Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase, then you won’t even be phased by the rain. You’ll merely unzip the compartment on the bottom of the bag, pull the rain fly over your pack, and continue on your journey. It’s as simple as that.
  • Quality and Durability — Everything on this pack is well built. The zippers are tough, yet smooth. The outer shell is rigid and durable, the straps are covered in a thick nylon and padded for comfort. InCase really did think of everything.

  • External Attachments — This pack is littered with cool external attachments. It has an almost tactical feel to it.

GoPro Back Packs

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase

The Kelly Slater Action Camera GoPro Pack by InCase Wakeboarding Magazine
  1. The shoulder straps include a chest clip to keep the straps from sliding off of your shoulders, which is a must with a travel bag like this.

  2. The shoulder straps also come with a GoPro mount, so you can get all those cool trail hiking or airport time lapses without wearing a funny head mount.

  3. There’s a bungee strap that you can custom configure on one side of the pack. You can tuck an extra t-shirt or something under it and grab it on the fly without having to unzip or unclip a thing. It’s functional, looks cool, and gives you something to be creative with.

  4. There are also little nylon loops strategically placed around the pack. I’ve clipped a carabiner onto one of my loops — the possibilities are endless!

  5. Last but not least, are the 4 nylon side straps with buckles. This is my personal favorite external attachment. You can attach a towel on the side and strap it down tight on the side of your bag, or you can reverse them and strap them across the back of the back pack to create two big straps to hold your skate deck. The first thing I noticed was the shape of the outside of the bag — it looked like it was meant to strap a skateboard to the back of it. Once I reversed the buckles and connected them together on the back of the pack, the board fit like a glove. The versatility here is downright impressive.
