The Regal 38 Surf is unique in the boating world—a model unlike anything else on the water. So versatile is the 38 Surf that not even the title of world’s largest wakesurf boat does it full justice. It also entertains, hosts overnights and fishes. Read on to learn how.

Regal 38 Surf wakesurfing
The wave can be customized to suit different riding styles and preferences. Tom King

The magic in much of the 38 Surf stems from the integration of twin Volvo Penta forward drives. Working closely with Volvo Penta, Regal designed the 38 Surf to make it easy to use. In surf mode, the drives work in tandem to offset each other and create a wave on either side of the 38 Surf. Simply push a button, and this boat is ready for endless-wave fun without having to worry about ever adjusting ballast tanks (there aren’t any) or micro-plate-position shifting. By adjusting the trim of the drive units, the shape and size of the wave can be customized to suit different riding styles and preferences. The pictures tell the story: This boat creates great waves. A rear-facing camera in the 38 Surf’s hardtop gives the captain a view of the action on the helm display, so monitoring when a rider falls is easy. (Still assign a spotter though!) Just note, because the 38 Surf is so much bigger than other surf boats, its waves are longer, and a normal-length wakesurf rope often isn’t long enough. Lengthening your rope will make it easier for riders to get into the pocket of the wave.

Regal 38 Surf cruising

With its center-helm design, the 38 Surf features steps leading to the bow area on the starboard side. Eliminating a true center-console’s walk-through on that side makes for more cabin space below. Here we found a well-appointed air-conditioned cabin with a full head and walk-in shower. Both the forward and midberth areas quickly convert from settees into a queen-size berths, providing comfortable room for four adults. There’s a skylight, and the trim and finishes are top-notch, making this Regal a more-than-comfortable overnight-capable vessel.

Back up at the helm, the captain is treated to dual 22-inch Volvo Watersport Garmin displays. Every system is controlled from here, including the wakesurfing functions, thanks to Volvo Penta’s integrated software. Dual throttles and joystick piloting, bow thruster, trim-tab controls and a wireless phone cradle round out the dash. Helm seating takes the form of four-across captain’s chairs. This proved comfortable, and the two outside seats swivel 180 degrees to allow viewing the on-water action. Plus, all four seatbacks fold down, turning the area into extra tabletop serving space.

Aft of the helm, you’ll find the aptly dubbed “refreshment island,” complete with all the amenities to keep everybody on board well-fed and entertained. Above the sink and grill is a separate MFD, giving the grill master control of nearly any system, including audio, lighting, the powered lounge and swim platform, and more.

Regal 38 Surf refreshment island
At the refreshment island you’ll find dual refrigeration, plus a grill, sink, trashcan and storage. Courtesy Regal Boats

For even more lounging and entertainment, head aft. Unlike an outboard-powered boat, Volvo Penta’s forward drive allows for a wide-open transom to swim, fish or do anything else. The large lounge bench can face forward, face aft, and convert to a sun pad. Plus, with the push of a button, it slides out over the swim platform to extend cockpit space. Can you say dance party?

Speaking of party, the lounge is also equipped with four optional JL Audio speakers and two JL Audio “wake subs,” which bring up the entertainment factor of the 38 Surf’s transom even more. Need shade? A PowerShade is integrated into the hardtop. And those who like to fish can opt for Regal’s unique rocket launchers, which also feature tow points for the wakesurf rope. Dual dive doors make boarding the 38 Surf easy, and giant insulated storage lockers to both the port and starboard add to the versatility. These can be used for general storage or as coolers.

Captaining the 38 Surf isn’t just comfortable, but it’s also a lot of fun. It rides solid and handles responsively, with plenty of power. Even for captains accustomed to much-smaller wakesurf-specific V-drives, the 38 Surf is nimble in tighter spaces thanks to joystick control of the forward-drive units and the independent bow thruster. Sightlines are clear through the large windshield, and the added sunroof in the hardtop is a nice touch.

Regal 38 Surf cabin

You can’t really comparison-shop Regal’s 38 Surf. There isn’t anything like it on the market. Aviara’s AV28S ($298,625 with a single 430 hp MerCruiser Bravo 4S) offers luxury, performance and wakesurfing, but that single-engine boat won’t fish or handle overnights, and it’s 10 feet shorter. Or you might consider a center-console, such as Formula’s 387 Sport  ($1.22 million with triple 300 Mercury outboards), which can fish, entertain a crowd in luxury, and weekend a couple in comfort. But it won’t wakesurf.

If I had to choose one word to describe the 38 Surf, it might be “unbelievable,” because if you look at all the capabilities on paper, it seems hard to believe. So, “versatile” seems to be the most apt descriptor, because this special boat is just that. You can cruise on it, fish on it, entertain on it, wakesurf behind it and, when the day is done, sleep on it. For big-water boaters who want to easily and comfortably do all those things, the 38 Surf is a must-see.

The Makai is Moomba’s newest flagship model, aimed at delivering the best experience at a more wallet-friendly price.

With an overall weight of 5,200 pounds and 4,000 pounds of available sub-floor ballast, the Makai is built to displace serious amounts of water. While we could not collect fuel-flow data, we did prove that the Makai creates the largest wakes and waves of any Moomba. The Flow 2.0 system engaged — two automated contoured plates that extend off the running surface of the transom— the wave forms into a large rideable surface with plenty of push and a pocket that’s easy to find and stay in while riding. By adjusting the Moomba Smartplate 2.0, a tab center-mounted at the transom, the wave can be made longer and mellower or shorter and steeper.

The helm features a 7-inch touchscreen that allows you to swipe through the menu and access different functions and screens, such as AutoWake and navigation. Simple toggle switches on the left side of the dash offer easy control for many of the boat’s functions, while a toggle to the right changes the Flow 2.0 surf system, allowing riders to switch from a port wave to a starboard wave, or vice versa. There is a convenient area with 12-volt and USB ports for storing a phone, as well.

There’s plenty of space for passengers and their gear. Jordan Klein Film and Video

With room for 18 and that sub-floor ballast, there’s plenty of space for passengers and their gear. The vertical Triton board racks are simple to operate and can hold a variety of boards. Interior heaters add to the comfort, and the adjustable rear seat is great for watching the action on the water. The transom walk-through is welcome as it keeps foot traffic off the boat’s upholstery. Up front the bow has plenty of room for lounging in comfort, along with the requisite speakers, cup holders and USB chargers.

AutoWake makes setting up the boat’s systems for wakeboard or wakesurf action a breeze. On-board sensors detect, among other things, the pitch and roll of the boat, adjusting the ballast accordingly to keep the wakes symmetrical and balanced. The Makai truly is a flagship model for Moomba, and a big step toward competing with the premiere wake boats on the market.

High Points

  • Built-in board stowage atop the Bimini keeps the interior decluttered.
  • G6 ballast system utilizes two pumps per tank, expediting fill and drain times.
  • New Pro Tower features LED lighting and surf tow points on both sides.

The biggest boat in the Malibu line has gotten a refresh for 2019, which not only makes some of the sport’s best wakes and waves even better but also adds features and comfort never before seen in the watersports industry. Of course, with the Wakesetter 25 LSV you’re getting the signature riding experience the LSV line has become famous for — that means symmetrical wakes and waves with mellow transitions, lots of pop for big air, and a ton of push and length for killer surf sessions. All of that is easily adjusted and shaped thanks to the Power Wedge III, Surf Gate and integrated ballast systems, which together Malibu designates as its ISP (Integrated Surf Platform).

Length: 25’0″ | Beam: 8’6″ | Draft: 2’8″ | Dry Weight: 5,600 lb. | Ballast: 4,825 lb. | Seat/Weight Capacity: 18/2,538 lb. | Fuel Capacity: 87 gal. Jordan Klein Film and Video

One of the major new features in the updated 25 LSV is the engine. Built by Malibu, the Monsoon M6 DI provides more torque while being quieter than ever before. The difference is noticeable, and we had no trouble at all getting on plane even with all the ballast tanks full and six passengers on board. The ride is comfortable and the boat handles easily, especially with the ballast drained. At a top speed of 36.8 mph we recorded a decibal level of just 86.

Inside, the 25 LSV Malibu has added a lot of new tech and features, including the Multi View Wake-bench seat. This back seat can be converted into a rear-facing bench to watch the action on the water, a forward-facing bench to change the layout of the cockpit or even a table. Outside the boat is the optional convertible swim step, part of which can be folded down into the water to serve either as a step to make climbing out easier or as a seat for when your crew is hanging out on the water.

A new captain’s chair upgrades the helm experience for the driver. It’s less bulky than before but also more comfortable, and it’s now easier to get in and out of thanks to leg cutouts. A power option allows you to raise or lower the chair with the push of a button, and it can rotate so you can join the conversation in the cabin when not driving.

The 25 LSV is rated for 18 people. If you can’t think of 17 people you’d like to bring along, don’t worry; once you have this boat, a lot more new friends will suddenly want to join your crew.

  • Three wireless charging stations are part of an array of options for staying charged.
  • Command Center dash is beautiful, easy-to-use and never has glare issues.

The newcomer in the acclaimed LSV line from Malibu, the Wakesetter 22 is the smallest of the bunch, but it more than lives up to the lofty expectations that come with the LSV badge. One of the unique options on the 22 LSV is a choice between two different hulls — Wake Plus or Diamond MultiSport. Like it sounds the Wake Plus is designed for those who just want to wakeboard or wakesurf, while those who also want to slalom ski should opt for the Diamond MultiSport. The Diamond Multisport has lifting characteristics that help it sit higher in the water, which reduces the wake for those who want to ski more aggressively.

The model we tested was equipped with a Wake Plus hull. Combined with Malibu’s proprietary Power Wedge III, Surf Gate and ballast tank tech, this hull produced surprisingly large and powerful wakes and waves, all of which offer the signature shape and transition the LSV line has become famous for. The systems are easily controlled with the large Command Center touchscreen dash. Unique to Malibu, the Sport Rotary Dial to the left of the steering wheel is a multifunction controller that lets the driver easily adjust the Power Wedge, Surf Gate, speed control and stereo by touch alone, so you never have to take your eyes off the water. Riders can also control Surf Gate, Power Wedge, speed and audio via the wearable Surf Band remote.

Bow seating is nicely appointed. Courtesy Malibu Boats

The Power Wedge III has more selectable set positions than in the past, allowing for even more fine-tuned customization of the wakes and waves. This is great for riders of different levels or abilities. If you’re a beginner and want a more mellow wave, you can decrease the angle of the Power Wedge and dial things back. If you’re advanced you can fill all the ballast, increase the Power Wedge angle and watch the wave grow. The wave has a nice-size pocket that’s easy to stay in, with plenty of push for all types of riders and board sizes.

With room for 14 people, the 22 LSV is comfortable without feeling oversize. This 22-footer handles with ease, even with a full ballast load, and the new captain’s chair keeps you driving in comfort all day long.

  • Transom seats provide a comfortable spot to hang out when you’re not riding.
  • Surf Band allows the rider to remotely control several of the 22 LSV’s functions.

Brand new from the bottom up for 2019, the ZS232 has flagship written all over it. While it’s not Supreme’s longest boat, it’s by far the builder’s biggest when it comes to on-board ballast and overall weight. The ZS is also the boldest and most unique-looking boat Supreme has ever built. On the water it’s a sight to behold — and it screams wake-making machine.

With its unique Tapered V hull, which pinches in toward the transom to allow it to sink into the water more easily, the ZS232 puts out large, symmetrical wakes and waves that can hit the pro level in terms of size and rideability. With eight separate ballast zones, all controlled from the touchscreen on the dash, it’s easy to customize the riding experience. A lever behind the steering wheel controls the Stinger Wake plate, which further customizes the characteristics of the wakes and waves. If you have a beginner who wants a more mellow ride, set the plate around 80 percent. If you’re more advanced and looking for size, set it around 30 percent. The QuickSurf tabs on the ZS232 are designed to work specifically with the Tapered V hull, and that shows when you’re on the water. The system is easily engaged and switched via the touchscreen, allowing surfers to transfer from one side of the boat to the other without worry or waiting.

Inside the ZS232 there’s room for 14 along with all the requisite gear. A removable backrest easily slides into place midway along the portside seating to create a comfortable, rear-facing seat. The Spradling marine vinyl is both comfortable and durable, while adding a higher-end look to the Supreme line.

The rear sun deck on the ZS232 is also the biggest Supreme has ever created, and underneath it there’s a great storage spot for wakesurf boards. Plus, under the padded seating area you’ll find two convenient draining storage areas. Accessible from the swim step, they make for great spots to store vests, ropes and handles when getting out of the water.

Overall the ZS232 marks a bold new entry in the wake market for Supreme, and it hits a lot of nails squarely on the head.

High Points

  • A second subwoofer in the bow keeps tunes bumping up front.
  • 4,600 pounds of ballast ensure you’re creating giant wakes and waves.
  • The ZS gets its name from the aggressive lines that form a Z on the port side and an S to starboard.

As a sleek-looking 25-foot wakeboat, the Fi25 makes an immediate impact. And thanks to 5,550 pounds of available ballast plus Centurion’s new Opti-V hull, which utilizes 20 degress of deadrise at the transom to sit lower in the water, that impact carries over to the wakes and waves. Without a doubt, the Fi25 made some of the biggest we tested this year.

2019 Centurion Fi25
Length: 25’0″ | Beam: 8’6″ | Draft: 3’0″ | Dry Weight: 5,850 lb. | Ballast: 5,050 lb. | Seat/Weight capacity: 17/2,550 lb. | Fuel Capacity: 89 gal. Garrett Cortese

For wakesurfing, fill all the ballast and activate the on-board QuickSurf Pro System, and you’ll be riding one of the most powerful wakesurf waves on the market, allowing you to ride farther back and move forward with ease. The QuickSurf Pro tabs switch easily and quickly, which lets surfers transfer from side to side without having to do much guessing. For wakeboarding, drain some of the ballast to help keep the wakes cleaner and more symmetrical. You’ll still be greeted by pro-level wakes with smooth transitions and tons of pop.

One standout feature of the Fi25 we tested is the DropZone tower, built by Roswell. Thanks to innovative design tweaks, it is now both lighter and stronger, and with the push of a button it easily folds down. Outfitted with powerful speakers, a large Bimini for sun protection and side tow points for wakesurfing, plus convenient touches like LED lighting and hooks for towels, ropes, vests or anything else, the DropZone tower is a must-have.

2019 Centurion Fi25

At the helm most of the boat’s functions are controlled via a large, easy-to-navigate touchscreen system, while paddle shifters at the steering wheel adjust speed and the boat’s Stinger Wake Plate, which can customize the shape and characteristics of the wakes and waves.

Stowage abounds in the Fi25 thanks to the sub-floor ballast tanks and deep seating. A rear locker accessible from the swim step is designed to fit a large wakesurf board as well. The rear seat is convertible in multiple ways. Sliding it forward into the cabin and inserting the backrests creates a rear-facing bench. Or mount the optional table to it and you have an area where everybody can eat and drink. Of course with a 25-foot boat, you have room for your whole family (and a couple friends). And thanks to that unique hull, the ride is smooth and comfortable.

High Points

  • Ramfill system fills the sub-floor ballast quickly (around 90 seconds).
  • QuickLaunch utilizes the trim tabs to help the big boat get on plane with ease (and minimal bow rise).
  • Floor locker between driver and OB seats is large enough for a cooler, or use it as a cooler itself.

The T23 is Axis’ biggest traditional bow boat, and it does an incredible job of blending that line with the aggressive looks the brand is known for. Built on the Wake Plus hull, which is designed to push more water to help create the symmetrical and sizable wakes and waves that are Axis’ signature, the T23 is set up to provide fun for riders of all ability levels.

2019 Axis T23
Length: 23’5″ | Beam: 8’6″ | Draft: 2’3″ | Dry Weight: 5,000 lb. | Ballast: 4,600 lb. | Seat/Weight Capacity: 16/2,256 lb. | Fuel Capacity: 65 gal. Jordan Klein Film and Video

With just a driver, passenger, factory ballast (with optional plug-and-play upgrade) and the new Power Wedge III, the T23 puts up a wake or wave that advanced riders will love. Add a few more friends to the boat and the wake only continues to improve. This is a testament to the combination of hull design and tech available on the T23. By adjusting the Power Wedge III, you can change the characteristics of the wake to fit your style and needs. For example, if you want the wave to be steeper, just bump the wedge into a steeper position. The other advantage of the new Power Wedge III is lift mode, which positions the foil in a way that makes it easier for the T23 to get onto plane while loaded with ballast. Once on plane it automatically deploys to the predetermined position chosen by the driver.

The T23 also features Surf Gate, the revolutionary wakesurfing technology from Axis’ mothership, Malibu. These hydraulic gates at each side of the transom can be deployed with the push of a button, allowing the boat to go from wakeboarding to wakesurfing and back without having to move weight around. Combined with the Surf Band remote system worn on the rider’s wrist, Surf Gate can be controlled on the fly while riding. It allows for transfers from a port wave to a starboard wave (or vice versa) with ease. Soft touch buttons at the dash make controlling many of the boat’s functions simple and easy, while a small digital display above the steering wheel shows wedge position and speed-control data.

With room for 16, the T23 can hold all your family and friends, plus tons of gear thanks to ample deep storage and racks integrated into the tower. Simply put, the T23 is going to provide you with a lot of fun, whether you’re driving, watching, riding or just hanging out.

One of the first things you notice while getting into the 2019 Axis A22 is the new interior. The materials and patterns have been updated for 2019, giving the Axis line a whole new look and feel that we really enjoyed. Add in a new more streamlined captain’s chair, an adjustable rear bench seat and a pop-up ratchet seat back on the port side, and you have an interior that’s comfortable and customizable for everybody.

The dash continues the Axis tradition of combining digital and analog gauges and switches, making control of the boat’s functions simple and easy. A new head unit to the left of the steering wheel features a large knob for easy volume control, and the audio system has zone control, so you can blast the tower speakers while pulling a rider, but keep the cabin speakers at a lower level.

Where the A22 really shines is in on-water performance. Design tweaks to the hull help it push more water, thereby creating larger wakes and waves. The new Power Wedge III has a larger surface area and offers more set positions to choose from, meaning riders of all styles and abilities can customize the shape of the wakes and waves to suit their preferences. With the Surf Gate hydraulic gates on either side of the transom, you get clean consistent waves that allow riders to transfer from side to side with ease. All of these systems can also be controlled by the rider via a Surf Band remote worn on the wrist. Don’t worry about screaming at the driver; just push the buttons and do what you want. With the stock ballast and the optional plug-and-play system, wakes can quickly go from a beginner to an advanced level.

The new A22 hits on a number of levels for watersports, especially with the new updates. For many buyers first getting into a watersports-dedicated boat, 22 feet is the “just right” mark. At that length, you get more room for passengers than in a 20-foot boat, but it’s often easier to handle, not to mention tow and stow, compared to a 24-footer. This is the A22 in a nutshell, and it might just be the boat Goldilocks picks when she decides to try wakesurfing with 14 of her bear friends.

High Points

  • Power Wedge III has more set positions, providing more customization to the wakes.
  • Upgraded interior materials and designs look better and are more comfortable too.
  • The larger bow offers more space for passengers to ride up front comfortably.

The all-new ZS series from Supreme marks a huge step forward across the board for price-conscious buyers of watersports boats. The ZS212 is no exception. For starters, its assertive lines and unique alignment of top deck and hull are bold — in a very good way. This is also where the ZS name comes from: On the port side the lines look like a Z, on the starboard side an S.

The ZS212 rides on what Supreme has dubbed its Tapered-V hull. As the name indicates, the hull tapers toward the transom, allowing it to sit deeper in the water, thereby displacing more water to create bigger and better wakes and waves. And even at just 21 feet, this boat can displace plenty of water thanks to 4,400 pounds of available ballast alongside a whopping 81-gallon fuel tank. More than displacement went into the design of the ZS hull though. Offset chines on either side help to mitigate the effect of the prop’s rotation, which makes for even more symmetrical wakes and waves.

Borrowing the QuickSurf Pro system from big sister company Centurion, the ZS212 makes waves that shape up quickly and easily. A lever behind the steering wheel allows the driver to adjust the Stinger Wake Plate to either lengthen or steepen the wakes and waves depending on each rider’s preferences. The dash houses a unique gauge layout unlike any we’ve seen in a watersports boat. With a mix of analog and digital gauges, the boat’s functions are easily controlled via the toggle switches and the touchscreen. The tach and speedo are stacked to the right of the steering wheel, which is unusual but highly functional.

Board racks and under-seat storage provide plenty of room for gear. Garrett Cortese

With room for 13, the ZS212 is a great all-around wakeboat in a smaller package. It still delivers wakes and waves to accommodate all skill levels and styles. Board racks and under-seat storage provide plenty of room for gear, and a unique wakesurf board storage spot has been added under the rear sun pad above the engine. Simply put, this little boat packs a big punch. If you’re looking to get more serious about your watersports experience but don’t need the size or all the bells and whistles of some other models out there, the ZS212 is a great place to start.

High Points

  • QuickSurf Pro system combined with the Tapered-V hull creates awesome wakes and waves for a 21-foot boat.
  • Seats at the transom by the swim step have draining lockers underneath.
  • 4,400 pounds of ballast is beyond impressive for a boat this size.

For 2019, the Supra SE has gotten a refresh both inside and out. Underneath, the SE incorporates deeper hull characteristics to create larger wakes and waves, while simultaneously incorporating a 4,100-pound sub-floor ballast system that utilizes two pumps per tank to increase both fill and drain rates.

The AutoWake system automatically detects the riding characteristics of the boat, including pitch and roll, and adjusts the ballast accordingly to ensure an even ride — thereby creating symmetrical and clean wakes and waves. The Supra Swell Surf System, helps to kick up the wakes and waves that pros live for, and the Smartplate tab can be adjusted to tweak the shape and size of wakes and waves. All the settings can be saved as AutoWake profiles for different riders.

Thanks to the Roushcharged Indmar Raptor V-drive in the model we tested, holeshot was impressive. With the Supra Launch System, which utilizes the trim tabs to assist with lift, getting on plane was easy — under 4 seconds empty, under 10 with the ballast filled.

The interior features Chill-Tech vinyl, which somehow never gets hot, even under full sun and apparently even with dark colors. Seating is ample, with room for 18, and it’s easily customized thanks to the convertible back seat and new pop-up backrests on the sun pad — great for lounging. The power-adjusted heated driver’s seat is an added comfort, especially for those cooler days on the water. The transom walk-through makes getting in and out of the boat worry-free, while a new locker at the swim step can fit a full-size wakesurf board.

One big new feature is the Vision Control dash setup, which features three touchscreen displays, two at the helm and one next to the glove box. The screens at the helm allow for one-touch access to all of the boat’s systems. The screen next to the glove box lets passengers control lighting and audio, so the driver doesn’t have to worry about who wants to listen to what.

All said and done, these updates don’t just help keep the SE atop the Supra line; they help place the SE among the best boats in the wakeboat market, period.

High Points

  • Chill-Tech vinyl interior stays cool, even in black colors.
  • Steering-wheel controls allow the captain to control the surf wave, wake plate and stereo.
  • FXOne power tower folds easily and requires no pins to set up or stow.
