Heyday H20 ready for wake sports
The H20 has big advantages with its smaller size. Garrett Cortese

Given the growth of the inboard watersports boat market over the last decade, it should come as no surprise that the trend of offering bigger and bigger models has only—for lack of a better term—grown. Manufacturers such as Centurion, Malibu and MasterCraft all offer models 26 feet or longer. But does bigger always mean better? Not necessarily. Fortunately, for prospective buyers who need something smaller, there are still plenty of options to choose from. Most brands offer at least one model 21 feet or under, and several offer multiple. While the advantages of larger boats specific to wakeboarding and wakesurfing are fairly obvious, such as more room for friends, larger ballast systems for superior waves, etc., there are a lot of benefits to smaller boats.

The most obvious advantage is the purchase price. Generally, a 20- to 22-foot model is going to cost significantly less than a 25- to 26-footer. The second biggest economic advantage for smaller boats is fuel efficiency. Less fuel consumed means more wallet savings. Plus, if you’re a boater who needs to trailer your boat to and from your favorite riding spots, a smaller boat means better gas mileage for the tow vehicle (and quite possibly a cheaper vehicle that doesn’t require such a large tow rating).

Along with being easier to tow, smaller boat models are much easier to store, especially if you need to keep one in a standard-size garage. Every model listed in this roundup features a collapsible tower, making it ideal for storing in tighter places. The smaller size also presents an advantage when it comes to handling. A 20-foot boat is going to be easier to maneuver than its 26-foot sibling. MasterCraft’s XT20 is 6 feet, 5 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and 1,800 pounds lighter than the Yacht Certified X26, so you know it’s going to be less demanding to handle in tight quarters.

With all the advancements in hull design and wave-shaping technologies, the smaller boats in the watersports segment are able to produce better wakes and waves than ever before. In years past, buyers who wanted clean surf waves with plenty of push for all the riders in their family often had to go for the bigger boats that displaced more water. In 2024, that’s not always the case. All the boats in our list can create waves that cater to all types of different riding levels and styles. You won’t be able to bring 16 or 17 of your closest friends; however, you can have a blast on the water with everybody you can bring, and you’ll likely save some money while doing it.

Here’s a look at nine of the best wakeboats under 21 feet.

MasterCraft XT20

The MasterCraft XT20 has been redesigned from the bottom up and MasterCraft have put a lot of time into making sure this 20-footer packs a punch more in line with bigger models. Equipped with the revamped SurfStar system, the XT20 can push out sizeable waves with plenty of push, along with clean, symmetrical wakeboarding wakes. The convertible rear bench and transom lounge seats–built with MasterCraft’s triple density foam and ultra-comfy vinyl–ensure everybody onboard will be comfortable. The XT line is one of the most customizable in the market, so buyers can opt to go more minimal with a new build, or take this 20-footer to the next level with all the bells and whistles MasterCraft have to offer.

Heyday H20

All-new for 2023, the Heyday H20 builds on the success of its bigger sibling, the H22. Heyday has carved out a solid spot in the marketplace by offering great performance at a very affordable price. The H20 is the only boat in this lineup without an automated surf system, but it doesn’t necessarily need one – it still puts up a solid wave, and that can be added to with an optional suction-cup-mounted wave shaper device. Two features we love about the H20: the rear-facing transom seats are an awesome way to watch the action on the water–no other manufacturer has seats like these, and the power-folding swimstep. This makes the H20 even easier to store in a garage or other tight spaces.

Moomba Mondo

Moomba have consistently upgraded the performance and capabilities of their models, allowing buyers to get solid performance at a more budget-friendly price. The 20-foot Moomba Mondo is the smallest in the lineup, but thanks to an impressive 3,700 pounds of ballast, the Swell Surf System plates and AutoWake technology, it kicks up seriously fun wakes and waves. AutoWake is key for the Mondo, as the system utilizes onboard sensors to monitor the boat’s running attitude. It will automatically adjust the Swell Surf System and ballast as needed in order to keep the wake or wave in an optimal spot. This takes a ton of the guesswork out of setting the Mondo up, which is great for new users or veteran riders alike, because it means less time trying to figure things out and more time on the water having fun.

Axis A20

The Axis A20 has been a staple in the Axis lineup since the brand’s inception, and it saw a major refresh in 2020. An improved running surface, combined with a more comfortable ride make the A20 a great option for families getting into the watersports scene. The ease-of-use of the Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems for wakeboarding and wakesurfing can’t be overstated. The A20’s versatility make it great for riders just learning to get up or those looking to add more advanced tricks to their bag.

Centurion Fi21

The Centurion Fi21 is the smallest boat in the Centurion line, but it still prides itself on the wave-making performance Centurion is known for. At 5,100 pounds, the Fi21 is the heaviest in this group (tied with the MasterCraft XT20), and combined with its whopping 4,750 pounds of ballast (by far the most in this group), it can displace a lot of water. Featuring Centurion’s acclaimed Opti-V hull for a running surface, that means riders are getting clean, powerful waves with a large pocket and plenty of push. The QuickSurf Pro plates at the transom ensure the waves stay consistent and fun, while allowing for limitless customization for riders of any skill level.

Malibu 21 LX

Introduced in 2022, the Malibu 21 LX is a model that takes influence from several previous Malibu models and molds them into a multisport, family-fun machine. The hybrid bow is one easy-to-spot representation of this–the 21 LX has lines similar to a traditional bow, but the interior area is shaped like a bigger pickle fork bow, allowing more room for passengers. Buyers can choose between two hull types, Wake Plus and Diamond. Wake Plus caters to those looking more toward wakesurfing and wakeboarding performance, while Diamond is geared toward ultimate versatility for users who also want to water ski more aggressively behind the 21 LX. As for the wakes and waves, the combination of Surf Gate and Power Wedge III ensure the 21 LX can be quickly and easily tweaked for all different levels and styles of riding. Opt in for the Surf Band remote and the rider can control those systems from their wrist while riding.

Nautique GS20

The Nautique GS20 underwent a complete redesign and is all-new for 2023. Touted as a true crossover performer, it can pull a fun wakesurf session with solid waves and then in a matter of minutes tow a skier through the slalom course. The GS20’s hull takes design cues from its Ski Nautique and Super Air Nautique G23 cousins, allowing it to perform better than you’d think in both extremes for a 20-foot V-drive. With Nautique Surf System plates tooled into the transom of the boat, the GS20 can quickly kick up solid wakesurfing waves that can be fine-tuned for beginners to more advanced riders. NSS plates are also much smaller than other surf system plates on the market, allowing for quick transfers from side to side when wakesurfing.

Supra SR

The 20′ 11” Supra SR offers the sporty, aggressive looks Supra have become known for, with all-around performance that caters to first-timers and more advanced riders alike. At just under 21-feet, the SR is rated for 14 passengers, more than any other boat on this list, and if you load up with friends, along with the 3,300 pounds of ballast and Supra’s Swell Surf System, you’re going to get some endless waves that are a ton of fun. Supra’s patented AutoWake system comes standard, making the on-water experience that much easier and more fun for both the rider and the captain.

Tigé 20 RZX

Despite being 20 feet on the dot, Tigé’s pickle-fork shaped 20RZX offers room for 13 while holding up to 3,000 pounds of ballast. With just one screen at the helm–the vertically-mounted Clear Screen–the 20 RZX keeps things simple and clean. The single screen on the right of the steering wheel means the captain has a clean line of sight and minimal distractions, while the 20 RZX’s systems can still be quickly and easily controlled with a couple finger taps. Preset settings for surfing, wakeboarding and water skiing make the 20 RZX a breeze to set up and start riding, and the TAPS 3T surf plates allow for easy customization of the waves for a variety of riders.

Heyday’s H20, with its pricing and neat features such as the patented Power Platform, makes owning a wakeboat more accessible. Hit a switch and this swim step rises vertically, shortening the boat to less than 18 feet and making garage storage easy, especially when combined with its folding trailer tongue. In the water, raise the Power Platform to keep waterfowl from climbing aboard and doing what they do.

More Heyday ingenuity is shown in the H20’s transom seats, which provide guests a unique view of the watersports action behind the boat. Bonus: Extra storage underneath these seats is easy to access from the back of the boat.

With a passenger rating of 12, the H20 offers room for a lot of friends and family to get in on the action together. We found the playpen-style bow very wide, offering loads of space for children and adults alike. Underseat storage throughout this Heyday H20 offers plenty of room for the requisite gear, while a sliding rear bench seat offers another option for guests aboard to watch the riding.

At the helm, the H20 keeps things simple for the captain in a good way. A Simrad touchscreen display on the right complements a stereo head unit on the left. Owners can control all of the boat’s functions and systems from this touchscreen, which utilizes a custom Heyday software package, aka GUI (“gooey”), or graphical user interface. Plus, since Brunswick manufactures both Simrad and MerCruiser, the captain can also use the display to check fuel and engine data.

When it comes time to do some riding, the H20 is no slouch. With 2,400 pounds of ballast located in four zones, plus three riders on board, the H20 kicked up impressive wakesurf waves and wakeboard wakes. The shape of both can be quickly customized by adjusting the center-mounted transom tab.

While manufacturers continue to push what’s possible by going bigger and bigger with new offerings, it’s refreshing to see Heyday buck that trend with the H20. It has big advantages with its smaller size, especially for buyers looking to get into the market without breaking the bank.

2023 Heyday WT-2DC https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/boats/2023-heyday-wt-2dc-wsbbg/ Fri, 14 Apr 2023 13:53:56 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=57841 The WT-2DC can handle a range of wake sports for a nice price.

The affordably priced WT-2DC and its big sister, the equally economical WT Surf, look unlike anything else on the market. The unique bow delivers an aggressive stance, helps create spacious seating, and provides its owners with a distinctive style all its own.

The WT-2DC can create wakes and waves for beginner to advanced riders. Garrett Cortese

While inspecting the WT-2DC, we discovered two unique seats on each side of the V-drive inboard engine. Most watersports boats use this space as a sun pad with storage below. Heyday flipped the script. One can sit facing either direction in these seats, but it’s especially fun to face aft and watch the watersports action occurring in the wake. For 2023, Heyday upgraded the interior vinyl, and attractive nonskid flooring throughout makes the WT-2DC easy to walk around and clean. Both enhance the style and vibe of the boat’s interior.

At the helm, you’ll find a sliding, swiveling seat with a built-in flip bolster. Classic analog gauges and toggle switches for accessories make the WT-2DC simple to use. Front and center, there’s a Simrad touchscreen offering fuel level and flow, speed control, and more. A unique element to Heyday’s cruise-control software is Smart Tow. Pick your launch option from level 1 to 5, and Smart Tow controls take-off speed accordingly. This helps with teaching those new to watersports. New ballast-tank meters highlight ballast levels, making them easier to adjust for customizing wakes and waves.

With its 1,800 pounds of ballast, the WT-2DC can create wakes and waves for beginner to advanced riders. Add the optional 650-pound plug-and-play ballast bag to upsize the ride even more. With in-floor and underseat storage throughout, plus the swiveling board racks on the tower, room for gear abounds. Another advantage for beginners: Surf tow points on each side of the tower allow the wakesurf towrope to be mounted to the side a surfer is riding, making it easier to get into the wave without dealing with the boat’s prop wash.

Heyday squarely aims the WT-2DC at buyers looking to get into a watersports boat at a more accessible price than most, whether for wakeboarding, wakesurfing or just hanging out.

The lines of Heyday’s H22 are bold and attractive, yet not overly aggressive. The aesthetic provided by the flat front of the bow echoes that of the LED light bar that’s both functional and futuristic. The H22’s high gunwales allow for deeper, more secure cockpit seating. Follow the sheerline aft, and the H22’s signature rear-facing transom seats are revealed. These seats are unlike any other in the water-sports boat market, constructed in a way that enables sitting in them while the boat is underway so that occupants can safely and comfortably enjoy the action in the wake.

Equipped with MerCruiser’s 370 hp T6200 inboard engine, the H22 planes quickly and easily, even when loaded with passengers and the available 2,950 pounds of ballast on board. At the helm, the Simrad touchscreen multifunction display features Heyday’s custom software, meaning the H22’s systems and accessories are controlled intuitively with a few finger taps.

Heyday H22 bow seating

In terms of comfort, the H22 offers a surprising amount of space to spread out despite its 22-foot length. Rated for 14, quality upholstery materials and attractive stitching add a customized look, while the sliding rear bench adds versatility and function. Access to the transom and its two unique seats is easy thanks to the nonskid flooring and cascading steps to the swim platform.

Swiveling racks on the tower make for convenient board stowage, and generously sized underseat compartments provide plenty of space for your gear and essentials. A large Bimini top deploys easily, providing cooling shade. The tower itself can be lowered by a single person, which aids in several scenarios, including making garage storage easier for the H22.

Customize the wake and wave shape by adjusting the center-mounted tab at the transom.

Heyday’s WTSurf is its largest model, with room for 17 watersports-loving family and friends. Though its name implies a specialization in wakesurfing, our time aboard proved this boat is capable of much more.

Riders are treated to sizable wakesurf waves with a clean face and a pocket that provides ample push. Garrett Cortese

Deep gunwales in the squared-off bow provide comfortable, ample space for multiple people to sit and face either fore or aft. A removable cushion transitions the space into a playpen-style lounge for added comfort. In the cockpit, spacious wraparound seating proves comfortable, and a convertible backrest at the OB seat allows boaters to face aft to watch the on-water fun. All-new vinyl upholstery makes all the seating more durable and comfortable. Nonskid decking throughout the interior and around the gunwales ensure secure footing.

The most unique feature of the WTSurf is undoubtedly the lounge seats on each side of the engine compartment. Designed to be ridden in while facing either forward or aft, these work well for lounging but offer an incredible vantage point for watching the wakesurf action. Speaking of the action, the WTSurf is built to deliver fun for a variety of skill levels, whether wakesurfing or wakeboarding. Fill up the 2,800 pounds of onboard subfloor ballast and riders are treated to sizable wakesurf waves with a clean face and a pocket that provides ample push.

Thanks to storage under the seats, in the in-sole locker, and on racks on the tower, there is plenty of room for all of that watersports gear. The tower also houses a large Bimini top that helps provide needed shade on sunny days.

The helm of the WTSurf is a mix of modern tech and classic analog style. Gauges displaying miles per hour and rpm flank the center-mounted touchscreen that gives the captain access to functions like cruise control, navigation and engine data. Toggle switches to the left of the steering wheel control onboard systems like the blower, lights and bilge.

From the first-time rider to the seasoned watersports captain, Heyday’s WTSurf delivers a solid mix of performance and comfort in a unique package that’s more accessibly priced than similar-size watersports boats.

The H20 is the latest release in the H-Series lineup of Heyday Wake Boats. It sports a sleek design, spacious interior seating, and a hydraulically lifted swim platform which enables the boat to be stored in most 23 foot garages at home. This Power Platform is an industry first and offers new ways to conveniently store and dock your boat after a fun time on the water with family and friends. The Heyday H20 also sports 2,400 pounds of ballast, a 14 person capacity, 6.2 liter 320 horsepower base engine by Mercury Marine, 40 gallon fuel tank, 8 foot 6 inch beam, and a dry weight of 4,865 lbs. The new feature-laden Heyday H20 packs a punch for a price, at press time, of $81,690!

Watch: Heyday + WakeU Collegiate Cup

Heyday hosted a pre-release influencer event on Thursday leading up to the Heyday Collegiate Cup powered by WakeU. Heyday crew provided three H20s to experience Heyday’s newest.

The influencers chosen to demo this new boat consisted of professional athletes from all over the world who were flown into Orlando to test the new H20. Here’s the kicker, many of the athletes in attendance specialized in other divisions of action sports like snowboarding and ocean surfing. It was a little bit chilly here on Lake Thonotosassa, but everyone had a blast on the new H20!

Participating Influencers:

Carro Djupsjö – Pro Wakeboarder – Florida

Mike Dowdy – Pro Wakeboarder – Florida

Dylan Miller – Pro Wakeboarder – Florida

Thomas Herman – Pro Wakeboarder – Florida

Max Van Helvoort – Pro Wakeboarder – Netherlands

Molly Kirk – Pro Surfer – Florida

Tina Cohen – Pro Surfer – Hawaii

Evan Geiselman – Pro Surfer – Florida

Noah Schweizer – Pro Surfer – Florida

Justin (Brick) Howze – Artist/Ocean Surfer – California

James Jenkins – Pro Foil Surfer – North Carolina

Jessika Jenson – Pro Snowboarder – Utah

Craig McMorris – Pro Snowboarder – Canada

After a few hours of fun on the water, I was able to catch up with a couple of Heyday Wake Boats top athletes. I spoke with Dylan Miller and Mike Dowdy to grab their thoughts on the brand new H20.

Wakeboarding: Hey guys! After riding behind the brand new Heyday H20, what sets it apart from other boats in its class?

Dylan Miller: I’m a huge fan of the wake! The surf wave is incredible for a 20 foot boat and I couldn’t be more happy to be a part of the Heyday team. I was able to have some input on the build and everything which is so exciting. We’ve been shooting behind the H20 for the last like 4 or 5 months getting the launch videos ready for the release. It’s really well-thought-out with the new storage systems in the boat and also the price. Heyday’s opening the door for a lot more people to get into watersports. It’s still an expensive boat, but it’s just so much more affordable than the competitors out there. It’s just a smaller version of H22 and has a great ballast system and includes a bunch of new upgraded storage inside of it.  I can’t wait to get one!   Heyday thought everything out really well, there’s a lot of boat here for 20 feet and it’s pretty impressive. The storage and the performance of the wave and the wake are amazing. I can’t wait to spend some more time behind it and hopefully have my own H20 in the future.

Mike Dowdy: Ya it was awesome! I got to be a part of the design process and help pick out some of the cool features it has to offer. I’d like to highlight a few of my favorite features. The H20 surf wave is bigger than most waves in its class. It’s comparable to a 23, 24, 25 foot wave in a 20 foot boat, which is pretty astonishing. Next, the rear-facing transom seats are the only rear seats in the industry that are legal to ride in while the boats underway, which is proprietary to Heyday. It offers a whole new line of sight to all the action happening behind the boat. Lastly, the Simrad touchscreen is unique, robust, and has a ton of helpful nautical information. All in all, I think Heyday knocked it out of the park!

Get a closer look at Heyday’s WT-2 Dual Console. Built from the bottom up for wake sports, it’s a surf-ready package with sport tower, 1,800lbs of hard tank ballast, and 350 HP engine. It wouldn’t be a Heyday without a signature hull shape and angled transom that generate clean, powerful waves.

Take a closer look at the new WT-Surf, Heyday’s largest and most comfortable model yet. This thing is built for big fun behind the boat and onboard, with room for 17 and more standard ballast than ever before. Like every Heyday, the WT-Surf is designed from the bottom up for wake sports. Its signature hull design displaces more water, which means more water fueling the wave and your ride.

The beauty of the new Heyday WT-2 is this watersports boat’s absolute devotion to function. The Heyday mission is to deliver maximum wakesports performance for minimum dollars; in that regard, the new 22-foot-6-inch WT-2 picks up right where the brilliantly innovative WT-1, Heyday’s debut, left off. Three feet longer than the WT-1, the WT-2 has a base price of $49,995 and is designed to produce the wake performance of longer tow boats that routinely cost more than $100,000.

Heyday — now a part of the Bayliner family of boats — is committed to reducing the cost of tow-boat ownership, allowing more enthusiasts to participate in wakeboarding and wakesurfing. The sponson bow? That resists swamping when picking up a downed rider, and it reduces overall boat length for easier towing and makes storage inside a garage possible — the hull length is 20 feet with the platform removed. The odd-looking 117-degree angle of the transom? At wake speeds, its shape creates a natural curl and push effect, so the WT-2 does not need additional wake-generating devices to produce an outstanding surf wake. A helm almost devoid of instruments? Heyday figures you own a tablet computer, which is also where you store your music. So this is one area it could cut costs without owners suffering. Bluetooth makes the connection to the engine and the Wet Sounds sound bar.

What’s new on the WT-2 is the location of the helm, moved from the boat center, as on the WT-1, to the traditional starboard side of the cockpit, but still located as far forward as possible to enhance visibility at towing speed. Adjacent to the motor box are the new “hot tub” lounges, with curved bottoms designed to cradle a pair of observers as close to the wake action as possible. The WT-2 is equipped with a speed-control system, tow towers and an 1,800-pound ballast system. A 350 hp V-drive power train is tuned and propped to deliver a mountain of towing torque that popped us on plane in 1.5 seconds. It’s engineered to plow a huge hole in the water at low speeds — and the wake is thick and powerful — but the WT-2 is also a pleasure to drive at cruising speed, comfortable and predictable with razor-sharp reflexes. Form does indeed follow function, and this boat really works.

High Points
* Delivers a $100,000 wake for $50,000.
* Clever “hot tub” lounge keeps crew off the motor box as per Coast Guard regs.
* Aft seating layout encourages crew socialbility and communication.
* A full complement of towsports essentials: tower, ballast, platform, audio.
