Unit Park Tech recently released the Nico 3, Nico Von Lerchenfeld’s latest signature wake park feature. Of course, Nico had to get out and make an edit to showcase how much fun it is. The setup features a gradual hip that leads to a down pipe, flanked by banked walls on either side. It’s simple in comparison to other signature features, but offers tons of room for creativity and unique lines, especially when hacked together with a Unit kicker or another feature. Here’s what Nico had to say about it; “I love riding up walls onto rails. I love popping out of a safety and landing into banks. I love dropping into tranny. I love a good down, and a good up rail. And mostly, I love that we combined all that into one feature.”

The first park to install the Nico 3 was Wakepark Triolago in western Germany, so Nico headed there to put this together.

In case you don’t know yet, Jonathan Silvershatz is a globe-trotting wake park rider whose style sets him apart from many other wakeboarders. “Cruisin'” showcases that creativity at the famed Thai Wake Park, outside Bangkok.

Cable park pioneer Mike Olson has sold Kansas City Watersports to an investment group that includes Liquid Force co-founder Tony Finn. Kansas City Watersports was one of the first cable parks in the U.S.

“I didn’t want to sell it to just anybody”, Olsen says. “As a matter of fact, it wasn’t really on the market. However, I am focusing on a new Wake Nation park in Houston and multiple other wake park projects around the country. At the same time, I wanted to keep the great tradition of KCW going. I called Tony, he called a few of his friends that love wakeboarding, and the deal was done. I will still be involved in helping them make KCW as good as it can be.”

“I love cables,” Finn says. “I have ridden at countless cables around the world, and I always have a great time! Also, I love the fact that you don’t have to be rich to wakeboard on a cable. Riding wakeboards at cables is super fun and it opens up our sport to millions of people that wouldn’t normally be able to enjoy wakeboarding! I am really stoked to be involved in Kansas City. KCW has pioneered lots of cool things in the wakeboarding world. We will continue Mike’s great traditions such as the Fools Fest, which of course is on April Fools weekend, Relentless Weekend, Ladies Night, Student night, and Beginners Night. The more cable parks there are in the world the better!”

Serial entrepreneur Marco Thompson is behind the investment group. His background includes one other cable park, four other action sports-related businesses, and a total of 45 start-up companies over the last 35 years. Thompson is an avid wakeboarder.

“I wakeboard and wakesurf in San Diego two times a week,” Thompson says. “Our business vision is to help create 20 cable parks in the next 5 years, and 50 in the next 10 years. A chance to continue the Kansas City Watersports tradition was a great opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

Die-hard wakeboarder Sean Hollonbeck will run the park. Sean, who has managed both small and multimillion-dollar businesses, looks forward to working in a field that he is passionate about.

“This is a job that where you just can’t wait to get out of bed and get to work,” Hollonbeck says. “I get to use my marketing background and draw on the decades of business growth experience Marco brings and the industry knowledge and enthusiasm that only Tony Finn can bring. I am also looking forward to reaching out to our local colleges and high schools, and running camps alongside our world class roster of Pros.”

Kansas City Watersports is a full-service cable wakeboarding park in a beautiful setting 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City at 25825 Edgemore Road, Paola, KS 66071. It offers excellent riding for wakeboarders of all ages and abilities. It also has a full-service pro shop, offering a full suite of rental equipment and the latest 2011 Liquid Force wakeboarding gear for sale. KCW also has a snack shop, sand beach and a paintball facility, so you can show up and spend an entire day with us. Kansas City Watersports will have its grand opening weekend for 2011 during Fool’s Fest, which starts on Friday April 1, and continues through Sunday, April 3. During April, Kansas City Watersports will be open Friday through Sunday from noon-7 p.m. Starting May 23, the park will be open 7 days a week .

The 2010 Asian Wake Park Tour event will be combined with the annual Lago Friendship Games that will attract the participation of our local riders.

Pro riders will be competing in three divisions. Valuable points in the Asian Wakeboard Association 2010 tour rankings and cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Amateur riders square off in six divisions and will have the chance to win Cable Ski memberships at Lago, trophies and gear from Stoked Inc.

Tricks can be performed anywhere in the course with no limit to the number of tricks executed.

The Format

Each competitor will only have 1 pass. Wakeboarders will be allowed 1 fall and wakeskaters are allowed 2 falls. Subsequent falls will end the rider’s run. Rixen Little Bro

Following a successful inaugural year, Wake Nation has announced plans to expand for the 2010 season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, cable wake park recently announced that it is adding a second body of water called The Practice Pond, which will feature Rixen’s Little Bro two-tower cable system. The Little Bro system is designed especially for wakeboarding beginners.

The half-acre Practice Pond, which will be located next to Wake Nation’s 10-acre main lake, is designed to give kids and beginners a place to learn to ride a wakeboard at a slower speed. The Practice Pond will have a starting dock on each end, creating an easy “up-and-back” system to facilitate more launch repetitions and generate a faster learning curve.

“The Practice Pond will be a great addition to the entire Wake Nation experience,” Wake Nation CEO Peter Kennedy says. “Its main purpose is to teach kids and beginners how to properly get up on a wakeboard or water skis.”

When a rider is ready to start on the Practice Pond, a Wake Nation instructor will start the overhead cable system and the rider will be gently pulled onto the 250-foot-long stretch of water at a relatively slow speed. Wake Nation instructors will provide coaching and will be able to instantly increase or decrease the speed of the ride to create the ideal learning environment.

At the end of each ride, the cable will stop and the rider will walk out of the lake and get into line at the other start dock for a return trip. Instructors will be on both start docks to provide free tips, pointers, and advice, and riders may also purchase more in-depth one-on-one lessons from Wake Nation instructors.

“We know many of our customers have never wakeboarded before,” Kennedy says, “so we’re always searching for ways to make the learning process faster and easier — and this new system is a great addition to our park.”

Hopefully, the Practice Pond will spur on the next generation of riders to experience wakeboarding for the first time. While the minimum recommended age to ride on the main lake is 10, anyone age 5 or older is welcome to ride on the Practice Pond.

Construction of the Practice Pond will take 2-3 months to complete, Kennedy added. It will be ready in time for Wake Nation’s 2010 season, which begins May 1.

In addition to the Practice Pond, Wake Nation will open its second season with new and improved kickers and obstacles on the main lake to challenge experienced riders. The park will also host a professional wakeboarding event next summer as well as several local tournaments.

It felt weird to be at McCormick’s Cable Park’s first Birthday Bash competition, because the cable wake park has already established itself as a Central Florida wakeboarding institution. It’s hard to believe that McCormick’s Cable Park has only been open a year. After all, it already has a host of solid obstacles and a dedicated rider base that faithfully sessions the clockwise-spinning cable on a daily basis.

Park owner and operator Michael McCormick knows how to throw a birthday party. Complete with cake, fully catered barbecue, and a host of Orlando pros, local rippers and South Florida cable wakeboard gods, this all-day, pro-am competition kept things interesting.

Despite some kook trying to steal one of McCormick’s trailers (seriously, some mouth-breathing, neck-bearded yokel tried to hook up to a flat-bed trailer and a high-speed chase down Muck Pond Road ensued), the day went off without a hitch.

The format was a four-person jam session for semis, followed by head-to-head showdowns for finals. The disciplines included wakeboard, wakeskate and wakeski.

Just a few of the day’s highlights included just about anything done by Diego Shaw (he was parallel to the cable more times than not), Dallas Friday’s big, clean tantrum to blind; Marc Shuster’s all-around cable wakeboarding prowess; Bob Soven’s toeside 900 off the kicker; Sascha Peschl’s rail-fluffing; and of course the kid trying to steal the trailer. But seriously, wakeboarding is cool — committing felonies is not.

On the weekend of September 25th, KC Watersports is going where no other  park would dare…..one billion riders in three days- give or take a few hundred million. That’s right, one billion riders (more or less), all converging at one time at the Midwest Mecca for wakeboarding. Accountants from Arthur Andersen will be on hand to make sure we get an accurate count.

This is your chance to be part of history. Ride, hang out, and compete with a billion wakeboarders and wakeskaters from all over the Midwest. In addition to riding, the event will serve as a fundraiser for the local chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters Foundation. There will be a raffle for some great items donated by our sponsors; all raffle proceeds go to the Foundation.

The cable opens Friday afternoon at 2 with open riding on the cable till dark. Saturday kicks off early- 9 a.m.- with open riding until 5. During the day, there will be a rail jam competition on each structure. Scion Box and Kustom Sandals Kicker will be judged from 9:15 – 10:00, Liquid Force Rail and the Monster Box from 10:15– 11:00, Alliance Flat Bar and Anarchy Rail 11:15– 12. Prizes will be awarded for the best trick on each structure during the judging period.

At 5, the cable shuts down for the rail competition. There will be beginner, intermediate, and advanced wakeboard divisions, along with an open wakeskate division. We’ll have drawings for awesome prizes and the lucky billionth rider will win a special Liquid Force prize pack that includes a Liquid Force Mod Wakeskate. (In the event we wind up a few million short, the winner will be determined by a random drawing.)

The fun continues Sunday with open riding from noon – 6. As an incentive to get you and your “bros” out, we’re offering a special discount. Come solo and pay $50 for the weekend pass that includes a comp entry for one division. You and one “bro” pay $45 each, bring 4 or more pay $40 each. Comp entry is $10 per division. So rally your troops and head to KC Watersports. Cheap camping minutes away at Miola Lake.

Come out, ride, and let’s show America a billion reasons why Midwest Wakeboarding is King!!
