On Saturday, Aug 21, 2021 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park the last PWT Tour stop of the year was held including the Moxie-Pro women’s series Live boat event. The venue, originally built for the rowing races at the Atlanta Olympic Games, provided a perfect setting for spectators and a challenging backwash for the pros.

In the Pro Men’s quarterfinal heats, rollers and contest jitters got to some riders. Kai Ditsch fell on the last trick of his second pass, Finn Bullock missed the handle on his last trick but edged Kai out from the semis along with his twin brother Ulf who fell early. Finn advanced behind stand-out Sam Brown who rode solid and stood both passes.

Unfortunately Bobby Knapp, the local kid from Lake Lanier had a heartbreaking fall in front of his cheering home crowd. Italy’s Massi Piffaretti advanced next to Guenther Oka, Cory Teunissen, Tyler Highman and Jake Pelot from Orlando who rode huge and clean.

Legend Bob Soven came out of retirement but fell early and did not advance, neither did the rookie on the tour Thomas Herman who fell on the double and missed the handle on a 720. Japan’s Shota Tezuka, the first rider to land a heel side 1080 in a contest, was nursing a recent knee injury and rode conservatively. He stood both passes and advanced to the next round behind defending tour champ Nic Rapa who stuck everything consistently.

In the pro men’s semifinal, sixteen-year-old Finn Bullock, who also trains with the olympic snowboarding team, fell at the end of first pass and didn’t make the cut neither did Shota Tezuka who fell early in both passes.

In the Pro women’s semifinals a few faces where MIA from the line up including Fan Favorite and US Masters Champion Mary Morgan Howell, 6xWorld Champion Dallas Friday along with Japan’s top Moxie-Pro boat qualified finalist Hinata Yoshihara. That did not make it any easier for the pro women who competed since the level and the depth of riding today is amazingly high.

Today there’s no room for error, Bec Gange known for being the first woman to land a whirlybird 540, fell early in her second pass and did not advance to the finals. Neither did the youngest qualifier of the Series, 12-year-old Kitt Smith. Kitt had a brave participation along experienced pros like Tarah Mikacich who stood up both passes and won the heat.

The incredibly talented rider has two more big contests on the line, the World Wakeboard Championships and the World Wake Park Championships going down in September. Stay tuned while he continues to progress with new tricks like the X-MOBE7 and doubles.

Nic Rapa inspired and challenged a stacked field of elite competitors with his consistency and focus. He defended his title and made history by winning the PWT Overall Championship for the third year in a row. A feat that has only been accomplished by the eminent Darin Shapiro.

Top contender Sam Brown went for it in the final and nearly landed a Chicken Salad Moby Dick 540 but caught an edge and fell. Although he missed the trick, he earned a spot in the podium winning third place in stop #4 and third overall for the 2021 season behind Oka and Rapa.

Good vibes and blue skies greeted the world’s top female Wake Park contestants for an anticipated day of competition at the Moxie-Pro Live Cable event. The top eight qualifiers from the Moxie-Pro Online International Cable Event were invited to compete at the Live event final.

The All-Star list of pro women included the 2021 US National Champion Texas native Anna Nikstad, World Champion Julia Rick from Germany, Moxie-Pro Boat winner Jamie Lopina, 15-year-old Terminus Wake Park native Rivers Hedrick, Trick of the Year winner Lisa Baloo and Fan Vote winner 10-year-old Anastasia Syrova (both from Russia), Maryh Rougier from France and daredevil Katinka Buiting from Holland.

Unfortunately Baloo, Syrova, Roughier and Buiting were unable to participate because of traveling restrictions, which opened the door to pro riders Meagan Ethell, Taylor McCullough and Hollie Waldrop who rounded up the line-up along standout Master Women’s champion Shannon Stuckey and local riders Riley Payne and Lacy Carlton.

Advancing through stacked heats we watched Orlando’s Taylor McCullough (fresh from her podium finish at the PWT/Moxie Boat event) make it to the Semis. While 18-year-old Hollie Waldrop rode clean and big but got edged out at the Quarters by Meagan Ethell that landed a half cab mute roll and a clean 540. Rider of the Year Anna Nikstad stuck a huge seven and a Pete Rose.

Nikstad dealt with food poisoning yet spent her morning coaching and inspiring dozens of girls at a riders clinic held prior to the event. In the semifinals, she fell on the kicker and did not have time to hit it again. She was eliminated by youngster Rivers Hedrick, the crowd favorite local rider, who landed a huge and clean 720.

Rivers Hedrick, Terminus Wake Park local favorite, made it into the finals landing a sick frontside 720 and defeated the top seed World Champion Julia Rick. Rick came all the way from Cologne, Germany and made it into the finals going huge and getting scarily close to some features in her landings. After sticking a huge and clean 720, she had a gnarly crash transferring from rail to rail and ended up in third place.

Online Moxie Pro Event winners World Champions Meagan Ethell and Julia Rick didn’t take home the gold in neither of the Moxie Pro Live contest. Ethell placed sixth at the Boat finals and Rick placed third at the Cable Final. New faces decorated the podium’s coveted top spots as the extraordinary level of riding continues to rise.

Jamie Lopina flew in from London and continued her legendary weekend the day after winning the Moxie Live Boat event. Equally good at the Park, and not a stranger on podium, Lopina had a third place win earlier in the season at the Red Bull Wake Duel in Lithuania.

It has been nearly a decade since the pro women and the pro men competed at a PWT stop together. Thanks to the vision of the leading sponsor Supra Boats, this historical weekend we will watch the final Stop #4 of the PWT Men’s Tour and the Moxie-Pro Women’s live event share the stage.

The PWT Mens Overall championship is up for grabs and a winner will be crowned over the weekend. The race for the championship is as exciting as it could be with the top riders inches away from the overall title. The stakes are high in a cutthroat competition with last year’s defending overall PWT champion Nic Rapa from Australia leading by 10 points over fellow Aussie Corey Teunissen and USA’s Guenther Oka who are tied in second position only 10 points ahead of 18 year old Australian phenom Sam Brown.

Keeping up with the times will increase the hopes for Wakeboarding to return to the XGames and in a near future become an olympic sport. Fittingly the event will be held at Lake Lanier’s Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia on August 21. Stay tuned!

The performances at August Lakes today in Katy, Texas at the Pro Wake Tour powered by Supra Boats were the best many have ever seen. The stellar conditions at this man made facility and an amazing wake from the Supra Boats SA 550 created the perfect platform for the professional and junior professional wakeboarders as well as the professional wakesurfers to put on an incredible show.

Learn about the PWT digital qualifier!

In the Pro Wakeboarding Final, Sam Brown led off the line up of the 6 rider final with some of the biggest names in the sport including Rapa, Teunissen, Oka and Pifferetti. After the first set of runs in the best of two run format, Cory Teunissen was sitting solidly in the top spot, then came Sam Brown’s final run. Sam kicked off the second round by putting down a line that was so prominent almost every rider on the dock proclaimed him the winner before they even took their second run. For Sam’s last move he landed a Nuclear Ole 720, a move that he had only landed once before and it had never been done in a contest.

Pro Wake Tour Marketing Director, Devin Tatro said, “The riding was absolutely incredible at this first event and it’s so good to be back to live – in person events, there is nothing quite like it.”

In addition to the performances, the wakeboarding and wakesurfing fans came out in droves to be a part of one of the first live wakeboarding events to return. The huge crowd helped to push the athletes to deliver their phenomenal runs.

The kick off of the 2021 Pro Wake Tour Powered by Supra Boats also carried an International field with winners from Australia, Switzerland, and the United States. Between the quality of the conditions and this diverse field the Pro Wake Tour is setting the standard in 2021 for professional wakeboarding and wakesurfing events.

In Pro Wakesurfing the 3 time Pro Wake Tour Champion Sean Silveira put down what is likely the most technical, smooth, and stylish wakesurfing competitive run ever landed. The shape of the Supra SA 550 wake was absolutely spectacular which allowed these guys to stomp nearly perfect runs. Right behind Silveira were the technically strong Swanson Brothers from Arizona. These three may very likely be in every final this year.

The Pro Wake Tour Powered by Supra Boats will launch the 2021 digital qualifier on Monday, May 17th. Tune into www.prowakeboardtour.com to see the level of riding from many of the top riders in the sport. With 3 live onsite events this year and great prize money the riders are ready to compete as proven by the names entering the contest.

Big names like Harley Clifford, Massi Piffaretti and Mike Dowdy have entered lines to qualify for the first PWT event in Katy, Texas on June 12th. As Clifford was stuck in Australia with lockdown mandates and a newborn, he was unable to compete in the events last year and both Dowdy and Piffaretti were sidelined with injuries. All three riders have been training hard and have put together some incredible lines in the effort to qualify for the 2021 PWT. It will be an exciting moment for the world to see the level of riding from these iconic athletes. Will they make the cut? Judging from what we have seen … definitely!

The 8 riders who are pre qualified onto the 2021 PWT based on 2020 standings are –

Nic Rapa, Cory Teunissen, Tyler Higham, Shota Tezuka, Guenther Oka, Fynn Bullock, Jake Hill and Jake Pelot. There will be a total of 8 more who qualify for the first event based on this online qualifier.

For Pro Wakesurfing there are 3 spots open for qualifiers into the first event. Currently, Sean Silveira, Camron Swanson and Taylor Swanson have pre-qualified into the wakesurfing series based on their final standings in 2020. For Jr. Pro this qualifying round will establish seeding for the first event, all riders entered will be invited to the Katy event.

Scoring for the digital events will be 75% based on the pro judges scores and 25% based on the online voting from the global enthusiasts. So get to www.prowakeboardtour.com and vote for the best rider in each heat and help your favorite rider make it onto the 2021 Pro Wake Tour.

Cory Teunissen catching big air at stop 3
Cory Teunissen en route to another PWT victory. PWT

The results of the third stop of the Supra Boats PWT are in, and it was another totally insane virtual event with some unbelievable (and never-before-seen) riding from the best riders in the world. For this round, Supra had each rider add a double up to their run, which definitely upped the fun-factor and the progression.

With one of the craziest runs we’ve ever seen in a contest/straight line setting, Cory Teunissen took home the victory. Here’s the 2018 PWT champ’s six-trick line:

  • Double indy tantrum to blind
  • Mute double half cab roll
  • Switch melon crow mobe 720
  • Switch melon 360
  • Switch toeside 1080
  • Toeside double indy back roll

For his double up, Teunissen threw down a massive switch heelside 1080. His run put him over the top, and he’s in line to take back the overall PWT title from fellow Aussie Nic Rapa if he does well enough at Stop 4. Stay tuned!

Watch all the Finals runs here!

Since 1996, Centurion Boats have hosted and pulled the World Wakesurfing Championships. This year, the event took place in Fort Worth, TX, pulled by the all-new Ri245 and Ri265 boats. Despite the smaller scale of the event thanks to COVID-19, the event was a huge success, featuring some incredible riding. Here’s a look back at some of what went down.
