There is nothing like competing for a National title whether you are a pro looking to cement your career in the record books or an amateur wanting to stack up against those in your category. The ability to put those skills to the test on the waters of Robin Lake at Callaway Gardens, the same venue as the prestigious Master Waterski and Wakeboard tournament, is the cherry on top. The WWA Wakeboard National Championships as well as the Nautique USA National Wakesurf Championship each presented by GM Marine produced the largest athlete participant pool in recent history with over 61 divisions crowning a National Champion over the weekend.

Nic Rapa on the podium

“There was a definite buzz this year. New faces and full fields in traditionally underrepresented fields,” observed Corrie Wilson, Executive Director at the WWA (World Wake Association). “This was the first year we separated Surf and Skim divisions for wakesurfing and the inaugural National Championship for foiling.”

Nic Rapa returned to form to take the win for the Pro Men Wakeboard division. When he is healthy and landing his runs that are consistent and filled with double flips, heavy springs and mobe 5s spinning each direction, he is difficult to beat. Cory Teunessin‘s first event back after injury served him well to land a podium spot but the trick of the weekend goes to Sam Brown with the first ever mute double mobe off the double in a traditional boat contest. He has landed it for double-up specific events, but never as a part of a scored run.

Zahra Kell on the podium
Zahra Kell (center) took top honors, Meagan Ethell (left) earned Second Place and Eugenia De Armas (right) from Argentina locked in Third Place. Courtesy Zahra Kell

Zahra Kell returned to competitive wakeboarding after taking a hiatus, only to stomp technical tricks like a (first for her in a contest) heelside backside 540 and a Dum-Dum. Meagan Ethell is always a favorite but with an early fall, she had to show her experience and keep it together to finish strong for a 2nd place spot.

Noah Flegel added 3 more eagles (the traditional Nationals trophy) to his collection with a win in the Pro Surf discipline as well as both the Strapped and Strap-less divisions of Pro Foil. A true entertainer on any water toy, Flegel landed airs, spins and flips (Strapped Foil) while making it all look like it is supposed to.

Reed Hansen took home his 11th National title in Pro Wakeskate, holding off Brian Grubb. This is Hansen’s first Nationals win as a new dad and he mentioned that he now has a “flock of eagles in my guestroom”. He now has one eagle to protect each one of his World Championship trophies.

The partnership with Wake-for-Warriors is one that the WWA and Nautique Boats are proud of as they all help to get wounded veterans to Pine Mountain, GA to compete in the adaptive divisions. Nate Hamilton, Tyler Densford, Connor Gatlin, and Matt Hanon took the wins in the various surf and wake divisions, inspiring onlookers and fellow competitors.

The WWA World Series final stop will be the Nautique WWA World Championships presented by GM Marine in Portugal at the end of the month.

Harley Clifford, Nicola Butler and Reed Hansen all won titles at the 2010 Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar, which were held at Sparks Marina outside Reno, Nevada, on July 14-18.

The Pro Men’s division highlighted the event. Defending national champ Adam Errington failed to advance past the semifinal round, leaving the national title up for grabs for Danny Harf, Rusty Malinoski, Harley Clifford, Phillip Soven and Bryan Hutton.

All five pros threw down impressive runs, but top seed Harley Clifford made the biggest impact on the water to take home his first-ever Nationals win. Former national champions Phillip Soven and Danny Harf rounded out the Pro Men’s division podium, respectively.

“It feels awesome to win Nationals — it’s my first one and I’m stoked,” Clifford says. “Winning today helps me out a lot in the King of Wake and I can’t wait for the next contest.”

With his Wakeboard Nationals win, Clifford now leads the King of Wake series with 460 points. Phillip Soven trails in second place with 425 points, while Rusty Malinoski rounds out the top three with 321 points. The Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Cahmpionships was the fifth stop in the eight-event King of Wake series.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on Emily Copeland Durham, as she made her first finals appearance in nearly two years. Copeland Durham had a fair finish in the six-woman final, taking fourth place, but it was former Queen of Wake Nicola Butler who took top honors at Wakeboard Nationals. Butler’s first-place finish today marks her first Wakeboard Nationals win. Two-time Wakeboard Nationals winner Amber Wing finished in second and Raimi Merritt took third.

“I was feeling pretty sore all weekend, but I pushed through it and made it to finals,” Butler says. “It was worth the pain to ride today and come out with a win.”

Butler now leads the Queen of Wake series with 290 points. Merritt moves up to second place with 245 points and Wing rounds out the top three with 240 points. The Air Nautique WWA Nationals was the third stop in the five-event Queen of Wake series.

Pro wakeskater Reed Hansen successfully defended his national title, taking down two former national champions in the process. Hansen’s first-place finish in the Pro Wakeksate division finals marks his third national title in four years. Grant Roberts and Stuart Shinn rounded out the podium, respectively.

“I love winning titles like this and having to defend them,” Hansen says. “It was a tough final for sure, but I’m stoked that I won and now it’s time to celebrate.”

Steel Lafferty took first place in the six-man final of the Jr. Pro Men’s division with a score of 96.50, a nearly 12-point differential from the next closest competitor. Julian Cohen and Daniel Powers rounded out the Jr. Pro Men division podium, respectively. It was Lafferty’s first national title in the Jr. Pro Men division.

In other action, Noah Flegel won the Boys division and Tori Koch won the Jr. Women division. Also in the Boys division, Paulie Koch took home the PCM Amateur Best Trick Award for his massive KGB. The award is a $250 cash prize.

Now that the Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by ROCKSTAR, has ended, the top tier riders from each of its 21 divisions will be invited to represent the United States at the WWA Wakeboard World Championships later this year in Orlando, Florida.

Taylor McCullough, a 12-year-old Illinois native, won her third consecutive national title in the girls division at the 2010 Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Fresh off a photo shoot with Sports Illustrated and recently signing with several leading industry sponsors, McCullough took another step forward in her blossoming wakeboarding career.

“I want to accomplish as much as possible,” McCullough says. “My dream is to turn pro, so I like to make the most of every opportunity to help me become a better rider.”

McCullough began wakeboarding seven years ago in her hometown of Centralia, Illinois, and hopes to make the transition from amateur ripper to pro rider within the next two years.

“I keep training, trying to get better everyday,” McCullough says. “I spent the past few weeks preparing for Nationals and was really happy with the way I rode today.”

With today’s win, McCullough has punched her ticket to represent the United States at the 2010 Wakeboard World Championships later this year, where she will have the opportunity to defend her world title.

In addition to McCullough, eight other riders took home a national title today, including Alexa Score, Jodi Vermillion, Allison Blaha, Forrest Risner, Jeremy Baker, Matt Vermillion, Brad Spencer and Nevada native Jen GilanFarr.

The King of Wake — the world’s elite pro wakeboarding series — announced today where and when the top pro riders will compete for the ultimate wakeboarding crown. In 2010, the top pros will compete in an eight-event series throughout the United States for one ultimate season-long points chase to see who rules the wake.

The eight events included in the 2010 series are the Wake Games, the WWA National Championships, the WWA World Championships and all five stops on the Pro Wakeboard Tour.

The King of Wake opens and ends its 2010 series at the Orlando Watersports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The series kicks off with the Wake Games on April 29-May 2 and wraps up the season on Aug. 19-22 with the WWA World Championships.

The Pro Wakeboard Tour features five stops, beginning on May 22 in Acworth, Georgia. The Pro Wakeboard Tour then continues on to Fort Worth, Texas, on June 12; Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on June 19; Colorado Springs, Colorado, on July 24; and concludes in Knoxville, Tennessee on Aug. 14, where a Pro Tour winner will be crowned.

The WWA Wakeboard National Championships, held in the greater Reno area of Sparks, Nevada, on July 14-18, will mark the midpoint of the season. The Chase for the Crown will begin following this event.

The Chase limits the King of Wake crown to the top 10 riders in the standings midway through the season. Only the 10 riders involved in the Chase will have their point totals adjusted and have the remaining three stops for topping each other in the standings for the King of Wake crown. The overall winner will be crowned at the 2010 Wake Awards.

Canada’s Aaron Rathy is the current King of Wake champion and will look to defend his title in 2010 against the sport’s top riders, including Pro Wakeboard Tour season champ and 2009 Rookie of the Year Harley Clifford, current National champion Adam Errington, and defending Wake Games winner Rusty Malinoski.
