]]>
For the past decade the world of wake boats has seemingly lived by the mantra “bigger is better.” The boats we use to wakeboard and wakesurf have grown in epic proportions, and today most “normal” wake boats are in the 23-25-foot range. Of course, not everybody needs, or can even use, boats that big. Some of us have lake restrictions, others have storage/dock issues, while many of us need to be a bit more conscientious when it comes to trailering, gas mileage, etc. Simply put, there are still a number of wake boat owners out there who don’t need the biggest beast on the market. In fact, there has been such a demand for smaller options that more manufacturers in 2018 are making sub 21-foot wake boats than ever before.

The advantages of smaller boats are numerous. As mentioned above, they are easier to trailer to and from your local riding spot, plus they are easier to store. Many of the boats listed below fit in a standard garage when the tower is lowered! On top of that, smaller boats are more fuel efficient, which helps when it comes to spending full days on the water. Outside of the obvious though, is that a 20-foot boat is generally easier to handle than a 24 or 25-footer. Some drivers/families might not be comfortable with a large boat, and that’s ok. Now more than ever manufacturers have been squeezing the most out of (and packing more into) the 20-foot category. Here are some of the best 20-footers on the market. Be sure to read the full reviews on the ones we’ve tested!

Axis A20

Length: 20′
Beam: 98″
Category: Wakeboard / Wakesurf

Axis A20
Axis A20 Axis

The short of it: The A20 takes the clean, consistent wakes the Axis line is known for and packs them into a 20-foot package with Axis’ signature styling. We recommend adding the Power Wedge II and Surf Gate if you go with this boat. FULL REVIEW HERE

Malibu 20 VTX

Length: 20′
Beam: 98″
Category: Crossover

Malibu 20 VTX
Malibu 20 VTX Malibu

The short of it: The 20 VTX is a surprisingly capable crossover boat that can do everything well. You won’t get the largest waves or smallest ski wakes, but you will get a boat that can capably go from pulling a skier through the course one minute to serving up sizable waves the next. The 20 VTX highlights what Malibu’s Diamond Multisport hull can do when combined with the Power Wedge and Surf Gate. If you want a more wake-oriented boat, you can get a 20 VTX with the Diamond WakePlus hull. FULL REVIEW HERE

Supreme S202

Length: 20’2″
Beam: 95″ . Category: Crossover

Supreme S202
Supreme S202 Supreme

The short of it: Supreme has been known for world-class wakesurf boats, but the company’s roots trace back to performance slalom skiing. The S202’s deep-V hull, combined with a narrower beam and a couple tweaks, allow it to pull wakeboarders, surfers, and slalom skiers surprisingly well. It feels more like a ski boat when you drive it, which is really fun! FULL REVIEW HERE

Supra SR

Length: 20’11”
Beam: 102″
Category: Wakeboard / Wakesurf

Supra SR
Supra SR Supra

The short of it: With its deeper hull, the 20-foot-11-inch Supra SR still displaces plenty of water to kick up solid and clean wakeboard wakes, and a really fun wakesurf wave. Add in Supra’s AutoWake technology and you won’t have any problem getting air and maintaining the ideal wake shape for you.

Moomba Helix

Length: 20’5″
Beam: 102″
Category: Wakeboard / Wakesurf

Moomba Helix
Moomba Helix Moomba

The short: Moomba’s smallest boat delivers surprisingly big wakes and waves in a very affordable package.

Moomba Mondo

Length: 20’6″
Beam: 99″
Category: Wakeboard / Wakesurf

Moomba Mondo
Moomba Mondo Moomba

The short of it: The Mondo is Moomba’s small performer with a traditional bow. A bit narrower than the Helix, it still delivers solid wakes and waves to most riders in a package that’s easy to handle.

Nautique GS20

Length: 20′
Beam: 100″
Category: Crossover

Nautique GS20
Nautique GS20 Nautique

The short of it: The Nautique GS20 takes its hull design from two major players: the G23 and the Ski 200. This, combined with Nautique’s NSS and NCRS technologies, allow the boat to deliver substantial wakes and waves and surprisingly small ski wakes. The GS20 is a 20-footer that can do everything.

Kicker Bullfrog Speaker Kicker Audio

If you have used Kicker products in the past, you are familiar with their quality in both structure and sound. The Kicker Bullfrog is no exception. You get what you pay for, and if you’re willing to dish out the $400 for this speaker, you know that your cash is most certainly buying a product that justifies the cost. It boasts a Bluetooth range of 100 feet and can last 20 hours on a full charge, as long as you aren’t charging your other devices from it. You can connect your device via Bluetooth or standard AUX cord, or you can simply listen to FM stations through its built-in antenna.

From the moment I picked the Bullfrog up, it was clear that this thing’s a tank, weighing in at roughly eight pounds. With its rubber exterior, this speaker was built to be tossed around and take a beating. The Bullfrog even claimed to be waterproof, and after a little test, we were convinced that this is the ultimate outdoor Bluetooth speaker.

When it comes to sound on the Bullfrog, this thing is loud, even for Kicker’s standards of Bluetooth speakers. Using this speaker in places where there is competing noise is no problem. Whether you’re vacuuming the house or mowing the yard, you’ll still be able to hear your jams. You could probably take this to a shuttle launch and still hear the Bullfrog. One of the raddest sound features of the Bullfrog was the placement of the speakers. With speakers on both sides, you get a true 360-degree sound that packs a punch.

Aside from volume, the sound quality of the Bullfrog is also great. It doesn’t matter if you’re listening to talk radio or techno, the sound comes through clear and crisp. If you wish to adjust bass or treble, that can easily be done through the Kicker connect app that can be downloaded for iPhone or Android. The app also allows you to choose more specifically through radio stations, since there is no viewing screen on the speaker itself. The coolest feature through the app has to be the Double-Kick feature. This allows you to take a second Bullfrog speaker and wirelessly synchronize it to the first one. This means two speakers, one device, and twice the party.

FUSION StereoActive is the world’s first truly portable and water-resistant stereo, perfect for watersports of all types. FUSION, a highly-respected and world-renowned audio company, realized there wasn’t a product like this on the market, so they tasked themselves with creating the StereoActive using the highest-quality materials and most innovative technologies available. After taking one home and testing it out on the lake, I’d say they did a pretty damn good job!

WATER RESISTANT

The first day I got my hands on the StereoActive, I put it on my paddleboard using the Puck mounting system and took it for a spin. I live on a lake with 10+ high-level wakeboarders, so I inevitably get swamped by their ever-increasingly large wakes when I take the paddleboard out. That day was no different. Shortly after getting on the water, a roller came over the nose of my board and splashed the StereoActive. That’s fine though — with a water-resistant IPx7 rating, the StereoActive is designed to handle rain, splashing and accidental submersion.

MUSIC CAPABILITY

This isn’t another basic Bluetooth speaker… The StereoActive roars. The volume is louder and the quality is more crisp than my buddy’s tower speaker setup on his boat — no joke. After 20 years of engineering innovative audio solutions, FUSION has sound quality dialed, clearly. They custom-designed the StereoActive with a long, directional speaker that faces the watersports participant, delivering powerful audio right where it needs to be. The StereoActive not only connects via Bluetooth, but it also receives AM/FM and Weatherband radio and can store MP3 media.

ACTIVESAFE

Although it’s sold separately, the ActiveSafe is a must! It’s probably my favorite part about the whole StereoActive package. The ActiveSafe is a modular dry box that attaches directly to the bottom of the StereoActive and keeps all of your personal belongings safe. It’s large enough to fit your smartphone, individual keys, and credit cards, and it’s watertight and water resistant. No longer do you have to leave your phone behind — put it in the ActiveSafe, connect it to the StereoActive via Bluetooth, and you’ll always have your favorite tunes with you on the water.

IT ALL FLOATS!

Both the StereoActive and the ActiveSafe float, even when connected together and weighed down with a phone, keys and more. So even in the unlikely chance that they become disconnected from the Puck, you won’t be left speakerless, phoneless, or smileless.
