Heyday H20 ready for wake sports
The H20 has big advantages with its smaller size. Garrett Cortese

Given the growth of the inboard watersports boat market over the last decade, it should come as no surprise that the trend of offering bigger and bigger models has only—for lack of a better term—grown. Manufacturers such as Centurion, Malibu and MasterCraft all offer models 26 feet or longer. But does bigger always mean better? Not necessarily. Fortunately, for prospective buyers who need something smaller, there are still plenty of options to choose from. Most brands offer at least one model 21 feet or under, and several offer multiple. While the advantages of larger boats specific to wakeboarding and wakesurfing are fairly obvious, such as more room for friends, larger ballast systems for superior waves, etc., there are a lot of benefits to smaller boats.

The most obvious advantage is the purchase price. Generally, a 20- to 22-foot model is going to cost significantly less than a 25- to 26-footer. The second biggest economic advantage for smaller boats is fuel efficiency. Less fuel consumed means more wallet savings. Plus, if you’re a boater who needs to trailer your boat to and from your favorite riding spots, a smaller boat means better gas mileage for the tow vehicle (and quite possibly a cheaper vehicle that doesn’t require such a large tow rating).

Along with being easier to tow, smaller boat models are much easier to store, especially if you need to keep one in a standard-size garage. Every model listed in this roundup features a collapsible tower, making it ideal for storing in tighter places. The smaller size also presents an advantage when it comes to handling. A 20-foot boat is going to be easier to maneuver than its 26-foot sibling. MasterCraft’s XT20 is 6 feet, 5 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and 1,800 pounds lighter than the Yacht Certified X26, so you know it’s going to be less demanding to handle in tight quarters.

With all the advancements in hull design and wave-shaping technologies, the smaller boats in the watersports segment are able to produce better wakes and waves than ever before. In years past, buyers who wanted clean surf waves with plenty of push for all the riders in their family often had to go for the bigger boats that displaced more water. In 2024, that’s not always the case. All the boats in our list can create waves that cater to all types of different riding levels and styles. You won’t be able to bring 16 or 17 of your closest friends; however, you can have a blast on the water with everybody you can bring, and you’ll likely save some money while doing it.

Here’s a look at nine of the best wakeboats under 21 feet.

MasterCraft XT20

The MasterCraft XT20 has been redesigned from the bottom up and MasterCraft have put a lot of time into making sure this 20-footer packs a punch more in line with bigger models. Equipped with the revamped SurfStar system, the XT20 can push out sizeable waves with plenty of push, along with clean, symmetrical wakeboarding wakes. The convertible rear bench and transom lounge seats–built with MasterCraft’s triple density foam and ultra-comfy vinyl–ensure everybody onboard will be comfortable. The XT line is one of the most customizable in the market, so buyers can opt to go more minimal with a new build, or take this 20-footer to the next level with all the bells and whistles MasterCraft have to offer.

Heyday H20

All-new for 2023, the Heyday H20 builds on the success of its bigger sibling, the H22. Heyday has carved out a solid spot in the marketplace by offering great performance at a very affordable price. The H20 is the only boat in this lineup without an automated surf system, but it doesn’t necessarily need one – it still puts up a solid wave, and that can be added to with an optional suction-cup-mounted wave shaper device. Two features we love about the H20: the rear-facing transom seats are an awesome way to watch the action on the water–no other manufacturer has seats like these, and the power-folding swimstep. This makes the H20 even easier to store in a garage or other tight spaces.

Moomba Mondo

Moomba have consistently upgraded the performance and capabilities of their models, allowing buyers to get solid performance at a more budget-friendly price. The 20-foot Moomba Mondo is the smallest in the lineup, but thanks to an impressive 3,700 pounds of ballast, the Swell Surf System plates and AutoWake technology, it kicks up seriously fun wakes and waves. AutoWake is key for the Mondo, as the system utilizes onboard sensors to monitor the boat’s running attitude. It will automatically adjust the Swell Surf System and ballast as needed in order to keep the wake or wave in an optimal spot. This takes a ton of the guesswork out of setting the Mondo up, which is great for new users or veteran riders alike, because it means less time trying to figure things out and more time on the water having fun.

Axis A20

The Axis A20 has been a staple in the Axis lineup since the brand’s inception, and it saw a major refresh in 2020. An improved running surface, combined with a more comfortable ride make the A20 a great option for families getting into the watersports scene. The ease-of-use of the Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems for wakeboarding and wakesurfing can’t be overstated. The A20’s versatility make it great for riders just learning to get up or those looking to add more advanced tricks to their bag.

Centurion Fi21

The Centurion Fi21 is the smallest boat in the Centurion line, but it still prides itself on the wave-making performance Centurion is known for. At 5,100 pounds, the Fi21 is the heaviest in this group (tied with the MasterCraft XT20), and combined with its whopping 4,750 pounds of ballast (by far the most in this group), it can displace a lot of water. Featuring Centurion’s acclaimed Opti-V hull for a running surface, that means riders are getting clean, powerful waves with a large pocket and plenty of push. The QuickSurf Pro plates at the transom ensure the waves stay consistent and fun, while allowing for limitless customization for riders of any skill level.

Malibu 21 LX

Introduced in 2022, the Malibu 21 LX is a model that takes influence from several previous Malibu models and molds them into a multisport, family-fun machine. The hybrid bow is one easy-to-spot representation of this–the 21 LX has lines similar to a traditional bow, but the interior area is shaped like a bigger pickle fork bow, allowing more room for passengers. Buyers can choose between two hull types, Wake Plus and Diamond. Wake Plus caters to those looking more toward wakesurfing and wakeboarding performance, while Diamond is geared toward ultimate versatility for users who also want to water ski more aggressively behind the 21 LX. As for the wakes and waves, the combination of Surf Gate and Power Wedge III ensure the 21 LX can be quickly and easily tweaked for all different levels and styles of riding. Opt in for the Surf Band remote and the rider can control those systems from their wrist while riding.

Nautique GS20

The Nautique GS20 underwent a complete redesign and is all-new for 2023. Touted as a true crossover performer, it can pull a fun wakesurf session with solid waves and then in a matter of minutes tow a skier through the slalom course. The GS20’s hull takes design cues from its Ski Nautique and Super Air Nautique G23 cousins, allowing it to perform better than you’d think in both extremes for a 20-foot V-drive. With Nautique Surf System plates tooled into the transom of the boat, the GS20 can quickly kick up solid wakesurfing waves that can be fine-tuned for beginners to more advanced riders. NSS plates are also much smaller than other surf system plates on the market, allowing for quick transfers from side to side when wakesurfing.

Supra SR

The 20′ 11” Supra SR offers the sporty, aggressive looks Supra have become known for, with all-around performance that caters to first-timers and more advanced riders alike. At just under 21-feet, the SR is rated for 14 passengers, more than any other boat on this list, and if you load up with friends, along with the 3,300 pounds of ballast and Supra’s Swell Surf System, you’re going to get some endless waves that are a ton of fun. Supra’s patented AutoWake system comes standard, making the on-water experience that much easier and more fun for both the rider and the captain.

Tigé 20 RZX

Despite being 20 feet on the dot, Tigé’s pickle-fork shaped 20RZX offers room for 13 while holding up to 3,000 pounds of ballast. With just one screen at the helm–the vertically-mounted Clear Screen–the 20 RZX keeps things simple and clean. The single screen on the right of the steering wheel means the captain has a clean line of sight and minimal distractions, while the 20 RZX’s systems can still be quickly and easily controlled with a couple finger taps. Preset settings for surfing, wakeboarding and water skiing make the 20 RZX a breeze to set up and start riding, and the TAPS 3T surf plates allow for easy customization of the waves for a variety of riders.

Tapping in at 26 feet, 5 inches in length overall and rated to carry a total of 18 watersports fans, the Malibu Wakesetter 26 LSV offers room aplenty. Its bow maintains a traditional shape, with an attractive sheerline and design contours in the hullsides that allow for a variety of custom gelcoat patterns and colors that scream fresh and new.

The 26 LSV’s wraparound seating is truly spacious and includes a unique storage locker that doubles as an adjustable backrest. The all-new, trademarked, Max-Pivot Seat is another highlight. Many wakeboats include rear benches that face the transom, but few also turn into a table, and even fewer turn into a bed. That’s next-level lounging—and next-level thinking from the design team at Malibu.

At the helm, the Wakesetter 26 LSV boasts the intuitive, trademarked Malibu Command Center. The main center-mounted touchscreen displays the engine’s vital readings and gives access to system controls such as the ballast tanks, trademarked Surf Gate, Power Wedge III and cruise control. A secondary touchscreen to the left of the wheel controls accessories like the stereo and much more. To the right is Malibu’s signature Sport Dial, which provides control of stereo volume and cruise-control speeds without removing your eyes from the water. A wireless phone charger adds convenience; you can leave those pesky cords at home.

Even with only two testers in the boat, the surf wave is incredible. Attribute this to Malibu’s industry-leading surf system with 4,600 pounds of hard-tank ballast and Power Wedge III adding an additional 1,500 pounds. Adjusting the Power Wedge III quickly changes the shape and style of the wave, from steep and rampy to long and mellow. Riders of any ability will be comfortable behind the 26 LSV. Getting on plane isn’t an issue either, thanks to the 606 ponies churning inside the Malibu Monsoon LT4 engine and the 606 foot-pounds of torque it puts out. Need help docking? Opt for the trademarked Stern Turn thruster.

Seeking a boat that’s as comfortable to lounge on with friends as it is to play behind while wakesurfing or wakeboarding? Check out the Malibu Wakesetter 26 LSV.

Malibu’s Wakesetter 22 LSV combines the traditional LSV bow styling with updated design cues and a sheerline embodying more attitude.

Thanks to Malibu’s upholstery, overall spaciousness and deep seating, you’ll find comfort throughout the 22 LSV. The seating offers versatility too, with the optional Malibu Wake View Bench able to flip over to become rear-facing, and pop-up seats available on both the port and starboard sides. Storage proves ample underneath the seats, as well as in the rear lockers.

Equipped with Malibu’s trademarked Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems, the 22 LSV kicks up wakes and waves that generate smiles. The 4,000-pound max factory ballast—big for a 22-footer—and a handful of spectators ensure that the riding surfaces grow. Malibu’s hull design guarantees clean, symmetrical, and customizable wakes and waves. Adjusting the Power Wedge quickly alters the size and attitude of the wakes and waves, and the rider can make all the adjustments they want by wearing Malibu’s Surf Band. Whether pulling a first-timer or an advanced wakeboarder, the Wakesetter 22 LSV can do the job.

A large transom walk-through makes getting aboard easy and removes the problem of people stepping on the seats. The flip-down swim step makes getting out of the water easier and serves as a great -submerged seat for chilling.

The trademarked Malibu Command Center means that all the 22 LSV’s functions are adjusted easily at the helm utilizing two large touchscreens and a smart-control knob array. The main center-mounted touchscreen displays boat vitals and gives access to system controls such as ballast tanks, Surf Gate tabs, the Power Wedge and cruise control. A secondary touchscreen controls stereo volume and cruise control. To the right, find the Sport Dial, which allows adjustment of Surf Gate, the Power Wedge, cruise-control speeds and volume without having to take your eyes off the water.

Malibu’s Wakesetter 25 LSV is the biggest and baddest model in the manufacturer’s most popular boat series. Translation? You know this boat is going to build truly massive, pro-level wakes capable of satisfying even the most hardcore wake-sports enthusiast.

With room for 18, the Wakesetter 25 LSV can take everyone surfing. Garrett Cortese

The Wakesetter’s magic formula starts with the hull. Malibu’s Wake Plus is designed to displace a lot of water, naturally producing a sizable wake behind the boat. Pumping up that wake even further is the job of a trio of subfloor, molded ballast tanks, which add 2,070 pounds without eating up storage space. Add an optional subfloor bow tank, plug-and-play bags aft, and the optional Power Wedge III that simulates an additional 1,500 pounds, and serious riders will find a drool-worthy 5,180 pounds of weight at their disposal. And that’s before adding the boat’s 18-passenger capacity into the mix.

The Power Wedge is unique in that it can quickly be positioned at many angles, dialing in both length and height to tailor the wake to a rider’s preference, or dialing the wake up or down to match beginner and pro skill levels. For the surf crowd, Malibu’s optional Surf Gate adds vertical tabs that deploy outward from the transom, diverting water coming off the hull to further build and shape the wake on either side of the boat. The Surf Gate’s quick response even lets riders switch sides on the fly.

While the features are many, controlling them is simple thanks to Malibu’s touchscreen Command Center at the helm. Its intuitive graphical interface lets the driver dial in all the above features with a few simple taps, and it remembers individual rider settings to streamline future rides. Malibu’s Surf Band wristband also allows riders to dial in settings themselves. As to the power available to haul all that wake-enhancing weight around the lake, our test boat featured a monstrous engine below the aft sun pad. Malibu’s Monsoon M6Di is rated at 430 hp and produces an impressive 460 pounds of torque. Surf’s up!

Malibu’s new Wakesetter 21 LX replaces both the 21 VLX and 21 MLX models in the boatbuilder’s lineup, yet the unique bow characteristics of those two outgoing models still influence the design of this 2022 boat. As with the pickle-fork bow the MLX sported, the 21 LX’s bow cockpit is squared off, creating more room for passengers. And as with the VLX, it resists distinct pickle-fork styling, sloping toward the bow’s central point in a more traditional fashion but with gentler, more angular lines. The result is a hybrid that gives the 21 LX a unique, modern look while providing kids and adults alike with a comfortable spot from which to enjoy the ride.

The PowerWedge III simulates an additional 1,500 pounds. Garrett Cortese

While Malibu uniquely offers buyers the choice of both ski- and wake-oriented hulls for the 21 LX, the boat supplied for our test was definitely optimized for board sports. A trio of molded ballast tanks were spread below the floor, adding up to 895 potential wave- and wake-making pounds without sacrificing storage space. Wake enthusiasts will likely add the optional Power Wedge III at the transom to pull the hull deeper into the water and, depending upon position, change both the length and height of the wake. Fully deployed, it simulates an additional 1,500 pounds. Add the optional bow tank and plug-and-play bags, and the total ballast can equal a whopping 3,485 pounds, a sizable figure in this size range.

Wakesetter 21 LX helm
Malibu’s Command Center makes it easy to control the ride. Garrett Cortese

Wakesurfers will want to option Malibu’s trademark Surf Gate, vertical tabs at the transom that divert water flow coming off the hull to enhance and shape the wake on a rider’s preferred side. All the above wake features, as well as speed, can be easily controlled at the helm via Malibu’s Command Center, an intuitive 12-inch touchscreen, complemented by an additional 7-inch touchscreen for functions typically handled by switches.

21 LX bow seating

All that ballast and passenger potential mean the engine has a lot of weight to push through the water. Malibu’s Monsoon M5Di is up to the task. Rated at 360 hp and producing 400 pounds of torque, it got riders up and out of the hole with ease and pushed an unloaded boat to a top speed of 40.3 mph.

21 LX audio control

High Points

  • Wake Plus hull not only displaces more water, but also flows more water to surf features.
  • Standard G5 tower includes Bimini and Wet Sounds speakers, and now folds lower.
  • Convenient pop-up ski pylon installed at the transom.

The biggest boat in the Malibu line has gotten a refresh for 2019, which not only makes some of the sport’s best wakes and waves even better but also adds features and comfort never before seen in the watersports industry. Of course, with the Wakesetter 25 LSV you’re getting the signature riding experience the LSV line has become famous for — that means symmetrical wakes and waves with mellow transitions, lots of pop for big air, and a ton of push and length for killer surf sessions. All of that is easily adjusted and shaped thanks to the Power Wedge III, Surf Gate and integrated ballast systems, which together Malibu designates as its ISP (Integrated Surf Platform).

One of the major new features in the updated 25 LSV is the engine. Built by Malibu, the Monsoon M6 DI provides more torque while being quieter than ever before. The difference is noticeable, and we had no trouble at all getting on plane even with all the ballast tanks full and six passengers on board. The ride is comfortable and the boat handles easily, especially with the ballast drained. At a top speed of 36.8 mph we recorded a decibal level of just 86.

Inside, the 25 LSV Malibu has added a lot of new tech and features, including the Multi View Wake-bench seat. This back seat can be converted into a rear-facing bench to watch the action on the water, a forward-facing bench to change the layout of the cockpit or even a table. Outside the boat is the optional convertible swim step, part of which can be folded down into the water to serve either as a step to make climbing out easier or as a seat for when your crew is hanging out on the water.

A new captain’s chair upgrades the helm experience for the driver. It’s less bulky than before but also more comfortable, and it’s now easier to get in and out of thanks to leg cutouts. A power option allows you to raise or lower the chair with the push of a button, and it can rotate so you can join the conversation in the cabin when not driving.

The 25 LSV is rated for 18 people. If you can’t think of 17 people you’d like to bring along, don’t worry; once you have this boat, a lot more new friends will suddenly want to join your crew.

The newcomer in the acclaimed LSV line from Malibu, the Wakesetter 22 is the smallest of the bunch, but it more than lives up to the lofty expectations that come with the LSV badge. One of the unique options on the 22 LSV is a choice between two different hulls — Wake Plus or Diamond MultiSport. Like it sounds the Wake Plus is designed for those who just want to wakeboard or wakesurf, while those who also want to slalom ski should opt for the Diamond MultiSport. The Diamond Multisport has lifting characteristics that help it sit higher in the water, which reduces the wake for those who want to ski more aggressively.

The model we tested was equipped with a Wake Plus hull. Combined with Malibu’s proprietary Power Wedge III, Surf Gate and ballast tank tech, this hull produced surprisingly large and powerful wakes and waves, all of which offer the signature shape and transition the LSV line has become famous for. The systems are easily controlled with the large Command Center touchscreen dash. Unique to Malibu, the Sport Rotary Dial to the left of the steering wheel is a multifunction controller that lets the driver easily adjust the Power Wedge, Surf Gate, speed control and stereo by touch alone, so you never have to take your eyes off the water. Riders can also control Surf Gate, Power Wedge, speed and audio via the wearable Surf Band remote.

The Power Wedge III has more selectable set positions than in the past, allowing for even more fine-tuned customization of the wakes and waves. This is great for riders of different levels or abilities. If you’re a beginner and want a more mellow wave, you can decrease the angle of the Power Wedge and dial things back. If you’re advanced you can fill all the ballast, increase the Power Wedge angle and watch the wave grow. The wave has a nice-size pocket that’s easy to stay in, with plenty of push for all types of riders and board sizes.

With room for 14 people, the 22 LSV is comfortable without feeling oversize. This 22-footer handles with ease, even with a full ballast load, and the new captain’s chair keeps you driving in comfort all day long.

High Points

  • Choose the hull that suits your needs, whether you’re a wake rider, a slalom skier or both.
  • Transom seats provide a comfortable spot to hang out when you’re not riding.
  • Surf Band allows the rider to remotely control several of the 22 LSV’s functions.

The Malibu 25 LSV is still the biggest boat in Malibu’s acclaimed line, and for 2019 it just got better. The feature list on this beast is almost as long as the boat itself. And if the performance is anything like the 2018 model (and we have a feeling it’s actually better), then this will be a boat to keep your eye on.

Not only does a boat like the 25 LSV look great, but it obviously has room for everybody and everything. And judging from some of the updates Malibu has put into this boat for 2019, it looks to be setting an even higher standard for big wake boats. Some of those updates include a redesigned helm seat that is more comfortable and easier to get in and out of, a more customizable rear bench that can convert into multiple stadium seating positions or a table, wireless power chargers, the Power Wedge III, and much more. The 25 LSV is built around the already redesigned (and highly acclaimed) 23 LSV, and its Wake Plus Hull. This means the legendary wakes and waves with that perfect Malibu transition that are easily customizable with the onboard ballast systems and Power Wedge.

Malibu’s 23 LSV model has long been one of the best selling boats in the world, and for good reason. Pound-for-pound it is one of the most well-rounded, user friendly wake boats out there. To give more options to the legendary LSV line, which also includes a 25, Malibu recently announced a 22-footer.

The 22 LSV slots nicely into Malibu’s diverse lineup, and replaces the 22 VLX. It holds 14 passengers, the same as the 21 VLX and 21 MLX, but will feel roomier because of a wider beam. Like the 22 VLX before it, the 22 LSV is available in two different hull styles: Wake Plus and Diamond Multisport. The Wake Plus hull is for those who prefer to solely wakeboard or wakesurf, while the Diamond Multipsort offers the ability for those who like to ski, as well. Add in the rest of Malibu’s amazing technology like Command Center, Power Wedge, and Surf Gate, and you have an amazing boat in a comfortable size.
