Costa has long been a leader in sunglasses’ design and performance. One of their recent releases harkens back to vintage designs, while adding a slew of new high-tech capabilities. The Grand Catalina frames bring back a classic Costa design from the 80s, while adding the capabilities of polarized 580 G (glass) lenses and a whole lot more.

Aside from the retro aviator design, the calling card of the Grand Catalina frames has to be the removable side shields. The pieces are easy to pop in and out, and add a lot of protection from the periphery – a big plus for those spending long days on the water, in the sun, or both. The side shields integrate seamlessly with the arms, and the rounded form at the top offers protection from above, as well. So not only do the side shields look good, but they add serious functionality, making the Grand Catalinas an extremely versatile pair of sunglasses.

Costa Grand Catalina
Costa Grand Catalina: Classic aviator styling combined with the protection, visibility and scratch resistance of a modern lens. Garrett Cortese

Of course, you can’t ignore the styling. The classic aviator look never gets old because, like a good pair of jeans or an Eames chair, it just works. The Grand Catalinas don’t just look good, though, they fit beautifully. The frames are lightweight, thanks to Costa’s advanced construction, and soft pads in the bridge prevent slippage and fatigue if you have to keep them on all day. The nose pads are also adjustable, for total customization. Spring hinges in the arms keep the Grand Catalinas locked to your head, while eliminating the stretched-out, loose feeling that can occur in sunglasses after lots of use.

I spent multiple days on the water in a variety of environments wearing a pair of Grand Catalinas equipped with 580 G “blue mirror” lenses. Simply put, they’re awesome, and work best in bright conditions. They are ultra-clear, while the polarization adds a little “boost” to the view, and makes looking into the water very easy. The design of Costa’s 580 G lenses is also scratch resistant – a big bonus for those of us prone to putting our glasses down where they can end up getting scuffed.

The only downside for me with the Grand Catalinas has more to do with my giant head than the design or performance of the sunglasses themselves. Because my head is on the wider side (I wear a 7-5/8 size hat), the side shields press against my temples when installed. It’s not uncomfortable at all, but definitely noticeable. It hasn’t detracted from me using the Grand Catalinas on a regular basis, both out on the boat and around town, but I’m not installing the side shields every time I wear them.

Overall, with the Grand Catalinas, Costa has created another winner. As boaters, anglers and watermen of all types continue to seek out eyewear options that offer high-end performance and a great, classic look, many different brands have strived to bridge that gap. Costa’s Grand Catalina frames may just be the Golden Gate.

Three Choices for Wakeboard Bindings https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/gear/three-choices-for-wakeboard-bindings/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=58897 Examples of entry-level, intermediate and expert bindings for your consideration.

The post Three Choices for Wakeboard Bindings appeared first on Wakeboarding Mag.

Hyperlite wakeboard bindings
Riders have a wealth of choices for wakeboard bindings. Courtesy Hyperlite

Wakeboard bindings were once little more than a metal plate, minimal thickness of foam, and a rubbery strap to rein in your heel. Today there are a wide variety of supportive, boot-style binding choices on the market. Here are three aimed at beginner to expert riders.

Entry-Level: Hyperlite Remix

The Wrap: Designed to accommodate a variety of foot sizes yet still offer some degree of support, open-toe bindings such as the Remix are ideal when sharing a board among family and friends. Look for a molded EVA footbed, floating tongue, and dual lace zones that can open wide and then cinch down to separately secure your foot and ankle.

The Trap: Wide range of adjustability comes at the expense of individualized support and comfort. All but casual riders will likely be looking to upgrade to a more advanced binding.

Price: $249; scheels.com

Midrange: Hyperlite Team X

The Wrap: A traditional plate-style binding that retains great range of motion, closed-toe bindings such as the Team X offer midrange support while still remaining somewhat sharable for riders of roughly similar foot length and ability. An internal ankle harness locks down the heel. Heat-moldable liners dial in the comfort and provide a more customized fit.

The Trap: Minimal size ranges means no more widespread sharing on the boat. Pricing substantially higher than entry-level offerings.

Price: $425; hyperlite.com or $399; Scheels.com

Read Next: Watersports Favorites

High-End: System Lowback Binding/Freepress System Boots

The Wrap: A boot/binding setup similar to snowboarding, System components offer exceptional feel and control. Bindings minimize toe and heel lift and are adjustable on the fly. Heat-moldable boots provide greater comfort and allow riders to stand directly atop the board without plastic or other hard material underfoot.

The Trap: It’s a significant high-end investment that’s not really shareable. Freepress boots offer less flexibility.

Price: System Binding $235; Freepress Boots $400; hyperlite.com

Best Gear for Dogs That Go Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/gear/best-items-for-wakeboarding-dogs/ Mon, 20 Nov 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=58167 Keep your dog safe and happy while on the water with this gear.

Dogs are so common aboard wake boats that they are treated as regular parts of the crew. Boat owners, and their guests alike, love having the companionship of a furry friend along for some good times with wakes and waves. Heck, check the Instagram accounts of fellow watersports enthusiasts, or pros like Ashley Kidd, and you’ll find people love to bring dogs along.

In this article, you’ll find a number of items designed to make your dog’s time aboard your boat safer, more comfortable.

Solstice Pup Planks
Solstice Pup Planks Courtesy Solstice Watersports

Solstice Pup Planks

$179 to $239; solsticewatersports.com

This semi-rigid inflatable dog-boarding platform has mesh steps that sink into the water, giving your dog an easy leg up to the boarding platform. The dog can sit there to drip off and dry. A duck dog may just hang there for the hunt. D-rings and a pair of 8-foot-long ropes included secure the platform to a boat, dock or poolside. It’s available in three styles. A mini size ($179) is designed for smaller dogs to 30 pounds. An XL will handle dogs to 200 pounds, as will the XL Sport in camo designed for waterfowling (both are $239). The manufacturer says the platforms are tougher than toenails, and considering its success in paddleboards, we wouldn’t argue a bit.

We like this device above all the rigid ladders we considered because it is easier to deploy and less likely to mar a boat’s sides.

Rex Specs goggles for dogs
Rex Specs Courtesy Rex Specs

Rex Specs

$84.95; rexspecs.com

Goggles for your dogs? Absolutely. Your dog might resist wearing them in the living room, but if you introduce them during a speedboat ride or a windows-open car ride, they’ll see the advantage right away. There are four sizes: XS, small, medium, large and XL. To fit your dog, measure the circumference of its snout in front of its eyes. Then measure the circumference of the dog’s head at the crown. We did so, and ours fit perfectly with the adjustable elastic head and chin straps. The goggles come in 11 colors, from tech police dog to hip psychedelics. Each goggle comes with a clear shield and a dark-gray one for bright light.

Our test dog resisted at first but appreciated the goggles as boatspeed increased. Bird hunters have discovered Rex Specs prevent eye injury to their dogs as they burst through brush.

Bluestorm Gear Dog Paddler
Bluestorm Gear Dog Paddler Courtesy Bluestorm Gear

Bluestorm Gear Dog Paddler

$49.99; bluestormgear.com

Bluestorm makes USCG-approved premium inflatable life jackets and foam life jackets for extreme watersports like whitewater rafting and paddling, so it should know a thing or two about keeping your dog safe in an emergency. The Dog Paddler is built with the same care as human personal flotation devices. The collar is adjustable with both Velcro and 1-inch buckled webbing. Two web straps across the backbone wrap around the belly and fasten on one side, where the flotation padding overlaps for size adjustment. Webbing down the backbone supports a corrosion-resistant D-ring for a leash, and there’s a single grab handle on the small and medium PFDs, and two handles for large dogs. Reflective tape on each side of the backbone makes the dog easy to spot at night. Sleek saddle bags on both sides hold small items, like plastic bags or treats.

The smallest PFDs do not have side pockets. The XL size has two lift handles. On camo models, the reflective tape is removable.

We found the dog easy to lift with the jacket fully adjusted, and she didn’t complain about any stress points. The stainless-steel D-ring was sturdy and located right over the shoulder, making the jacket a balanced harness for walking from the car to the dock. This vest was the easiest to adjust and put on thanks to the side-saddle location of the belly buckles. A size medium fit our 40-pound English setter. It comes in four colors, plus camo. Sizes are XS, small, medium, large and XL.

Yeti Rambler Jug
Yeti Rambler Jug Courtesy Yeti

Yeti Rambler Jug

$100 to $140; yeti.com

Water you or your dog from these insulated jugs. No need to ice them down if you’re using cold water; they’ll hold that temp all day and longer. The jug comes in half-gallon and 1-gallon sizes, and seven colors. You can customize the jug if you order it from Yeti (starting at $6). Add your dog’s name so nobody filches his water. The jug has a large lid for wide-open access, and a sippable screw top is ideal for pouring or drinking straight from the jug.

The gallon jug is so versatile. Use it for your pet’s water supply, human water, or even an ice bucket for party drinks. The stainless-steel bail makes it easy to carry the insulated stainless-steel jug.

Yeti Dog Bowl
Yeti Dog Bowl Courtesy Yeti

Yeti Dog Bowl

$40 to $50; yeti.com

It’s not always bad to serve dog food in the galley—just ask your dog. These Yeti bowls are nonskid and resist tipping. If they spill, blame the skipper, not the bowl. I doubt that most dogs could tip them over. They are insulated with Yeti’s proprietary vacuum process, so they maintain the temperature of your dog’s food or water. A four-cup version is $40, and an eight-cup boomer bowl is $50. Add your dog’s name or any other design starting at $6 per side.

The rubber rim on the bottom isn’t a suction cup; instead, friction holds it firmly in place so the dog doesn’t have to chase it around the floor. The bowls come in seven colors.

1st Mate Marine Safety and Security System
1st Mate Marine Safety and Security System Randy Vance

1st Mate Marine Safety And Security System

$473.90, additional fobs $98; 1stmate.com

Judging from the way my fleet-footed dog scampers about the boat, there’s no crewmember more likely to go overboard than her. When I installed the 1st Mate security system on my boat, I realized the passenger’s man-overboard fob looked exactly like a dog tag, so I snapped it on her collar and off we went. The 1st Mate system is available for all major engine brands and comes with a fob and a wristband. Additional fobs and wristbands are available, and the device will monitor up to seven passengers. If one goes overboard, the boat stops, the waypoint is marked on the GPS system, and the captain can turn about for a pinpoint rescue.

1st Mate also works as a security device, preventing engine start-up in the absence of the skipper’s device. It also satisfies USCG regulations requiring the skipper connect to an emergency cutoff switch.

Ruffwear Float Coat
Ruffwear Float Coat Courtesy Ruffwear

Ruffwear Float Coat

$89.95; ruffwear.com

I think Ruffwear has been at this K-9 project the longest, and it has always provided a reliable product. The neck collar on this vest is adjustable, and one side of the closure slips into the other side, secured by an adjustable web strap and a snap buckle. Two web straps wrap over the back beneath the fabric to make them snag-free. The belly flaps overlap to adjust to the girth of the dog, and the buckles fasten under the belly and are adjustable for a secure fit. The lift handle is padded, and a plastic leash ring is underneath.

A size small vest adjusted to our 40-pound dog, but we could have stepped up to a medium. We found it tough to buckle the belly straps because they came together directly underneath the dog, where they were hard to see. The padded lift handle is more comfortable than the other candidates we tested. We would have preferred a stainless-steel leash ring over the plastic one. It comes in three colors. Sizes are XXS, XS, small, medium, large and XL.

EzyDog DFD X2 Boos
EzyDog DFD X2 Boos Courtesy EzyDog

EzyDog DFD X2 Boost

$85 for XS to XL, $55 for 2XS to 4XS; ezydog.com

The DFD X2 Boost has a shape that extends farther back to the dog’s haunches. The neck collar adjusts over the shoulder instead of under the neck. Belly buckles come together under the belly. An anodized D-ring is properly located to avoid neck injury while attached to a leash and is balanced so owners can use it to lift a dog, if necessary. The unpadded lift handle is integrated into the collar’s adjustable strap.

The neck adjustment over the shoulder was easiest to manage because it was not hidden under the dog’s neck. However, the belly straps were out of sight and hard to connect and adjust for that reason. The small-dog version fits dogs as small as a teacup, such as Yorkies and possibly gerbils. If your dog loves swimming, the unpadded handle will dry the fastest. It comes in red and yellow, and is available in XS, small, medium, large and XL. For smaller dogs, sizes 2XS, 3XS and 4XS are available.

Bajio sunglasses
Sunglasses are a tool for wakeboarding, wakesurfing and waterskiing or even foiling, providing the visibility needed for safety and effectiveness while also protecting eyes from the damaging rays of the sun. Courtesy Bajio

A pair of quality sunglasses can be as important to a boater as almost any other piece of equipment. There’s nothing worse than loading up the cooler, every piece of gear and all of your friends for a day on the boat, only to get on the water and realize you left your shades behind. Not only does it suck to squint all day, but overexposure to harmful UV rays can cause eye fatigue or even photokeratitis–sunburn of the cornea. When shopping for new shades, be sure to look for polarized lenses that also offer full UV protection. Of course, there are countless options available these days, and it can be hard to decide not only what looks and feels best, but what will suit your needs on and off the water. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a new pair of shades.

Costa fit guide
There are a few things to take into account when finding the perfect fit. Courtesy Costa

Fit

Do you get the coverage you want and need across your face? Are the frames too wide or too narrow? Do you feel the arms pinching your temples or by your ears? A poor fit is one of the main causes of sunglass dissatisfaction. Learn how to find the right fit.

Lenses

In terms of high-quality sunglasses these days, lenses come in three general varieties – polycarbonate, glass or a blend of the two. Glass is considered optically clearer and higher quality, and it is also much more resistant to scratches. But glass is also heavier, usually more expensive and more difficult to replace. Polycarbonate lenses are a plastic material that is lightweight and highly impact resistant – you’ll hear more than a few manufacturers use the term “impact-proof.” Polycarbonate lenses are also inherently UV resistant, so they don’t require a special coating like glass lenses to offer that protection. While they are impact resistant, polycarbonate lenses are more susceptible to scratches, but because they are lighter and more flexible, they are also easier to replace.

Sunglass lens color
Sunglass lenses come in a wide variety of colors. Basically, darker lenses work better in brighter conditions. But, conditions vary, and so color selection is highly-nuanced. Courtesy Bajio

Lens Colors

In general, blue and green shade lenses are considered best for sunny, on-water activities. Blue lenses block the most glare while enhancing vision in bright conditions, making them great for most days on the boat, especially fishing offshore. Green lenses will filter some blue light and reduce glare, helping reduce eyestrain in bright light, and can be ideal for flats and shallow water fishing. Lighter colors like amber and rose will generally let more light in, which can be beneficial in low-light situations. Get some guidance on selecting the right lens color.

Functionality

More glasses now offer more functionality, allowing them to be worn in a variety of scenarios. These include features such as anti-slip pads on the nose and/or arms, clip areas on the arms for keepers/ties, and more. If you tend to sweat and don’t like it when your sunglasses slide down the bridge of your nose, look for pairs that feature soft, grip pads to help hold them in place.

Sunglasses and boating go together like peanut butter and jelly, or maybe more like full throttle and big smiles. But all too often, the importance of quality sunglasses are overlooked.

We’re more aware than ever of the damage that can come from continued exposure to the sun’s UV rays, and our eyes are just as vulnerable as our skin. For years, alpine enthusiasts, from climbers and adventurers to the après ski crowd at the lodge have utilized sunglasses with side shields. The sun’s reflection off the snow can lead to snow blindness if the eyes are left unprotected too long. Now, with the Embark series from Smith, that same protection is afforded to boaters, anglers and water enthusiasts of all kinds.

With the sun’s reflection off the water and other surfaces having a similar effect to that of snow, it’s important to make sure your eyes are protected. Smith has incorporated their side shield protection in a very slick way. A lot of side shields are pieces that either slide on or attach to the sunglasses’ arms. Smith, on the other hand, has incorporated the Embark’s side shields into the main frame, allowing them to fold in with the arms when needed, and comfortably rest against your temples, whether you have a narrower or wider profile. Should you ever want to wear the Embarks without the shields, simply pop them out and place them in the included hard travel case.

Smith Embark sunglasses
Smith’s ChromaPop lenses provide great contrast and allow boaters to see true colors. Courtesy Smith Optics

The Embark feature Smith’s polarized ChromaPop lenses, which are great for on-water conditions because they provide great contrast and allow me to see true colors.Over the years, Smith sunglasses have been some of my favorites to have while out on the boat because of the lenses. Also of note, the Embark are very lightweight, so ear, temple or nose fatigue is not an issue, and the soft-grip nose pads ensure the glasses won’t slip off if you start sweating. The Embark are also packaged with a removable neck strap that quickly and easily clips into the ends of the arms. I wore the Embark for several full days of sunny boating in central Florida, as well as a full day at the beach, and now consider them my go-to sunglasses for when I’m on the water.

As watersports enthusiasts, we are also boaters, and so we’re always on the lookout for things to make life easier, simpler or more enjoyable on the water—preferably all three. Of course, finding those things in the ever-changing sea of consumer-driven mania can be tough to do, which is why we went out searching for you. Below you’ll find an assortment of items, from advanced tech gadgets such as a Garmin smartwatch and an emergency satellite beacon, to the simple, such as a towel or hammock. Take a look and see if one (probably more) can be of use to you.

Wake Foamies Mini-Mal 5’4″ Wakesurf Board

Wakesurfing is a ton of fun, but for some it can be intimidating or often too expensive. Why buy an EPS foam board with carbon wrap for close to $1,000 if it can be easily damaged? Enter the Wake Foamies. Constructed with a polycarbonate deck that is durable and strong, then topped with a soft EVA grip, the Mini-Mal is both easy to ride and can take a beating. Best yet, it won’t break the bank. $419.99; liquidforce.com

ACR Bivy Stick

ACR Bivy Stick

Extra safety is never a bad thing, especially when boating offshore and out of cell phone range. Combined with the Bivy App on your cell phone, the Bivy Stick allows for connection with a global satellite network so you communicate via two-way text messaging, SOS, location sharing, one-touch check-in, and detailed weather reports. $299.95 (not including data plan); acrartex.com

Nomadix Towels

Towels are essential on boats of any kind, but often they’re bulky and take up too much storage—and once those bulky ones are wet, good luck using them a second time. Nomadix towels are absorbent, quick-drying, odor-resistant, ultralight and easy to pack. A variety of sizes makes it easy to use some for drying off, others for clean up, and hooded, poncho versions for changing clothes in privacy. $25 to $70; nomadix.co

We all love getting together for a good boat tie-up, but they can be stressful. Simply blow it up, attach it to the sides of your boat via included ties and hangout with much less worries. The Titan also works great as a large fender for your boat dock. $299.99; missionboatgear.com
