Teunissen, copping his fourth PWT title, was self-effacing and modest: “With the surgeries at the beginning of the year, I felt so far away from top form and I couldn’t prepare the way I wanted to. Battling through the ankle pain on every set throughout the year has been tough and I didn’t expect much out of the season.” Courtesy Team Nautique

Wakeboarding professionally is not easy. Having a long career adds its own set of challenges. But winning events and overall titles over a 10 year span where the field has become more and more elite makes this win for Cory Teunissen that much more special.

When asked about how many total victories this makes for him in his illustrious career, Teunissen joked, “My dad is such a geek about this stuff and just told me that this was my 38th pro win and my 13th PWT event win.”

While one might expect so much longevity and success to manifest itself with ultimate confidence coming into the season, Teunissen’s outlook was not so self-assured. “With the surgeries at the beginning of the year, I felt so far away from top form and I couldn’t prepare the way I wanted to. Battling through the ankle pain on every set throughout the year has been tough and I didn’t expect much out of the season.”

In a year with four, yes four,  separate winners on the PWT series, the sport has shown that the gap from the usual suspects and the rest of the field has closed dramatically. As a judge on the PWT in the late 20-teens it was more often the case that if Harley Clifford, Corey Teunissen or Nic Rapa didn’t end up on the top of the podium, something went awry in their respective runs. This year however, the phrase “the overall level of riding has gotten to such a crazy place” is more true than ever.

“The final was nuts, everyone landed a complete run with everything they wanted to do. I mean, Thomas (Herman) got last in the finals and he landed a double backroll to the flats, double toeside backroll and a KGB 720 off the double up!” shared Teunissen about his good friend and riding buddy.

If Cory’s experience was ever going to serve him well, it was going into an event that he had to win if he wanted to take the overall PWT, but that didn’t stop him for pulling for his friends. “I wanted Shota to win almost as bad as I wanted it for myself.” His love of the sport and ability to battle through a rough set of physical challenges was rewarded with what he will file away as one of the most memorable wins of his career. “This one is one of the standouts for me. You always remember your first big wins, but having so much doubt and uncertainty throughout the year, this one means the most.”

Big congrats go to Camden Marsden who took the top spot at his first ever PWT event in the Jr. Pro division and Noah Bollard winning the overall title for the Jrs. Daniel Johnson earns the prestigious Rookie of the Year for the Pro division and will surely be one that will have the tour vets looking out for in the years to come.

The first Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour event of the season kicked-off in Groveland, Florida, on Saturday, May 20.

There, the world’s best boat riders took aim at the overall titles in the Pro Wake, Pro Surf, and Jr. Pro Wake divisions. With the 2022 champions each returning in healthy form, there is always an added layer of pressure to make a statement at the first tour stop and let the field know that they are there to defend.

Perhaps the most experienced at rising to the occasion is last year’s overall Pro Wake champ Cory Teunissen. A consummate professional, Cory secured the top seed in the finals and landed a clean run with 3 double flips, a 1080, backside 9 and a few mobe 5s and frontside 900s for good measure. Past overall champ, last year’s runner up and the man most likely to make Cory’s day more difficult, Supra team rider, Nic Rapa, was unfortunately taken down by an injury sustained in training up for the first event. The Cory and Nic battle that we have grown accustomed to seeing will have to wait.

Cory’s day was not a walk in the park by any means.

“Tyler Higham’s run could not have been done any better” stated Pro Wake Tour driver and wakeboard legend Trevor Hansen. “He landed a run that he had never put down, even in practice, stomping a toe-side backside 900. He was so close on his double-up but didn’t ride it away” Hansen continued.

Pro Wakeboard Tour Finals Results Stop #1

  1. Cory Teunissen: 93.33
  2. Tyler Higham: 91.33
  3. Fynn Bullock: 87.67
  4. Massi Piffaretti: 85.33
  5. Maxime Roux: 80.67
  6. Shota Tezuka: 73.67

The final trick could have been the difference in the first and second place spots.

There were new faces in the mix making noise with first time Pro division competitors Maxine Roux and Fynn Bullock making the finals. Bullock, who competes at a high level in snowboarding as well, made his first pro podium placing 3rd.

Junior Pro Wakeboard Finals Results Stop #1

  1. Beaux Wildman
  2. Shion Takaiwa
  3. Daniel Johnson
  4. Noah Bollard

Beaux Wildman, who is making a name for himself on all types of water sports equipment, made the finals in both Jr. Pro Wake and Pro Surf. Wildman took the victory for Jr. Pro wake and took the first step towards repeating his overall title.

Youngster Jett Lambert took the win in Pro Surf, riding well beyond his teenage years and holding off the top 3 overall finishers in 2022.

With the high-flying action on the water and on land with the BMX and Freestyle Motocross demos, the Supra Boats Pro Wake Tour proves to be the place to go to have your mind blown. Stop #2 in Acworth, GA comes up in a few short weeks (June 10)  and with the level of riding continuing to elevate, this season will be one to stay tuned in to.

Pro Wakesurf Tour Finals Results Stop #1

  1. Jett Lambert: 95.67
  2. Taylor Swanson: 94.00
  3. Camron Swanson: 78.00
  4. Beaux Wildman: 71.67

Who do you consider to be your strongest competition on tour?

So right now the field is filled with a lot of high quality talent. But with the competitive scene quickly changing keeping things fresh and interesting it allowed for guys like Sam Brown to really shine. Also, even though Tyler Higham didn’t have his greatest showing on tour this year I think the new format in wake will really benefit him moving forward as well. It’s really been the first time I’ve finished a season on tour and have a lot of work to do moving towards next year.

Who inspires you?

I gain a lot of inspiration from a lot of different sources. I’ve never really been the type of person who fixates on one particular person or thing. That being said, as I get older I’ve noticed that my nephew, my niece and my whole family have become a really big driving force for my motivation. Moving away from home every year in theory sounds like the dream, and don’t get me wrong it definitely was when I was 16, 17. But being away from home is getting harder and harder every year so personally if I’m going to make that sacrifice and separate myself from the people that I love for a long period of time, I’m going to do everything I possibly can to make it worthwhile. I do definitely channel a lot of positive energy from my good friend Alex Chumpy Pullin and my PT Nam Baldwin as well.

How old were you when you first wakeboarded?

So I was introduced to wakeboarding and waterskiing pretty young as my old man was into it when he was younger. So when my brother and I came along we hopped in the water pretty quickly. I first waterskied when I was 3 years old and wakeboarded a year later when I was 4. It’s crazy to think that personally I don’t have my own memory of me getting up on a wakeboard for the first time like I know a lot of people do. But me growing up in the sport and being influenced by an industry like wakeboarding was all the more special. It’s weird to think I’ve been wakeboarding for 20 years already and I’m only 24 haha.

What are you going to do in the off-season?

So right now I am writing this stuck in my mandatory 2 week hotel quarantine which sucks. But I am so excited to get out and just hang out with my family and friends. Being away from home this year was pretty difficult as I was dealing with a lot of personal things. So just being home and with the people that I love will be a lot for me. But as for my plans while I’m home, I cannot wait to be able to surf everyday when there are waves. I think that is one of the things I look forward to the most, just being in one of the most beautiful places in the world and sitting in warm water and catching super fun waves. I can’t wait. As for wakeboarding plans, I’ll definitely still be in and around the industry. I’ll probably end up filming a little video part with Hyperlite, there are plans to do a project with Red Bull and I work closely with Nautique while I am here also. There are a lot of exciting things coming up for Cory.

Are you going to compete and film in Australia?

Moomba is looking like it’s going to be moving forward so I’m definitely planning on competing in that plus all the projects I have coming up too.

Do you surf?

I try to surf everyday when there is swell. I live on the beach here in Australia so I can surf everyday when there are waves. I’m definitely not sitting here saying I am a great surfer. But surfing for me is the perfect outlet to just let my mind and body flow and enjoy myself.

What is the scene like in Australia right now? Is it still on lockdown or will we see some wakeboarding action in the Australian summer?

I think it is no secret Australia is making things very difficult to get out and do things right now. I don’t want to come on here and talk about covid. I swear that’s the only conversation I’ve had over the last 18 months or whatever. I try to look at the positives in life and enjoy the little things like waking up in my favorite part of the world every day or being able to do what I love for a living. If you start to worry about the negatives in the world like covid then it’s a vicious cycle of negativity which leads into mental health issues. I am out here trying to promote positivity and just being a good person. Everything else in the world doesn’t matter. That being said, I have a good feeling about the world getting back to normal again soon.

Who are the Australian OG’s?

Yeah I’m real good mates with all the old boys. Josh, Daniel Ike, Deano. It’s funny when they all get together and catch up for a couple beers all the old stories of being on tour come back out.

The performances at August Lakes today in Katy, Texas at the Pro Wake Tour powered by Supra Boats were the best many have ever seen. The stellar conditions at this man made facility and an amazing wake from the Supra Boats SA 550 created the perfect platform for the professional and junior professional wakeboarders as well as the professional wakesurfers to put on an incredible show.

Learn about the PWT digital qualifier!

In the Pro Wakeboarding Final, Sam Brown led off the line up of the 6 rider final with some of the biggest names in the sport including Rapa, Teunissen, Oka and Pifferetti. After the first set of runs in the best of two run format, Cory Teunissen was sitting solidly in the top spot, then came Sam Brown’s final run. Sam kicked off the second round by putting down a line that was so prominent almost every rider on the dock proclaimed him the winner before they even took their second run. For Sam’s last move he landed a Nuclear Ole 720, a move that he had only landed once before and it had never been done in a contest.

Pro Wake Tour Marketing Director, Devin Tatro said, “The riding was absolutely incredible at this first event and it’s so good to be back to live – in person events, there is nothing quite like it.”

In addition to the performances, the wakeboarding and wakesurfing fans came out in droves to be a part of one of the first live wakeboarding events to return. The huge crowd helped to push the athletes to deliver their phenomenal runs.

The kick off of the 2021 Pro Wake Tour Powered by Supra Boats also carried an International field with winners from Australia, Switzerland, and the United States. Between the quality of the conditions and this diverse field the Pro Wake Tour is setting the standard in 2021 for professional wakeboarding and wakesurfing events.

In Pro Wakesurfing the 3 time Pro Wake Tour Champion Sean Silveira put down what is likely the most technical, smooth, and stylish wakesurfing competitive run ever landed. The shape of the Supra SA 550 wake was absolutely spectacular which allowed these guys to stomp nearly perfect runs. Right behind Silveira were the technically strong Swanson Brothers from Arizona. These three may very likely be in every final this year.

Three-time Pro Wake Tour Champion Sean Silveira ( 91.66) won the wakesurfing podium, while brothers Taylor Swanson (left, 70.00) and Camron Swanson (right, 64.33) came in second and third, respectively.

Cory Teunissen is coming into the 2018 Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour season riding better than ever, and that’s saying something considering last year in a finals run he landed two double flip variations and a 1080. The Australian native is looking to do even better this year, while also staying focused on what really matters: having fun. Here’s a look at what makes Cory tick, along with some of his incredible wakeboarding.

Cory Teunissen recently was in Portugal where he was part of a project with the Red Bull team there called “Out To Sea.” For this project, Cory was able to ride across three different waterways.

The adventure started in the scenic waters of Castelo do Bode Dam where Cory took a glassy boat set and threw down the hammers that he’s known for.

From there, Cory headed to the quiet town of Tomar for a few winching sessions and drew a crowd of onlookers, all of whom surely had never seen anything like that before.

The third and last stop of the trip was to the Atlantic. There, Cory met up with Japanese surfer Hiroto Arai, who was in town for an international surfing competition. Together the two Red Bull athletes had a tow-in surf session on the Atlantic’s powerful waves.

“Portugal has great diversity to offer. Those few days were super intense in which we rode for hours and hours in a row, but it was so worth it. The biggest challenge was the wakeboarding in the ocean because that’s what got me out of my comfort zone. This was a trip of a lifetime, and I go back home with Portugal as one of my favourite destinations.”

First introduced in 2015, Cory Teunissen’s pro model from O’Brien has evolved to become one of the premier boat boards on the market. If you need evidence of that, look no further than Cory’s rise to the top of wakeboarding’s ranks. Granted, Cory could probably ride a two-by-four better than most of us can ride a wakeboard, but his riding has progressed by leaps and bounds since he got on the CTP, and much of that is likely attributed to a shape that suits his riding perfectly.

cory teunissen wakeboarding

O’Brien CTP

MSRP: $540
Sizes: 135, 141 cm
Tyler Soden

One of the first things you notice when checking out the CTP is the light weight and flexibility. O’Brien‘s Feather Core keeps the weight down while still allowing the board to maintain its shape up the wake. Because the board is designed for Cory and his boat-riding prowess, you’d expect it to be on the stiffer side of the spectrum, but O’Brien has designed its signature Feather Core in the CTP to be on the flexier side, which gives it a livelier feel behind the boat that is a lot of fun. When you first get up on the CTP, it just feels comfortable, which is always reassuring. Boards that are too fast or hunt from edge to edge can feel uncomfortable, and that’s not how you want to feel when you’re edging into a giant wake.

Even with its flexier characteristics, the CTP is stiffer where it needs to be, which is right in the belly for boat riding. Combine that with its three-stage rocker line and you’re looking at some solid hang time. The pop is easily the feature of that board. Of course, every board manufacturer is going to sell you on how much pop a board has, but the CTP isn’t built up around some marketing jargon, it’s just a board that really does have lots of pop. What helps provide some of the pop is the speed, which can be deceiving at first because the board is mellow when not on edge. Put it on edge though and the board takes off, thanks in part to O’Brien’s signature Delta base with the chevron pattern in the tip and tail. The pattern helps reduce drag, which increases speed and allows for a cleaner release off the wake.

The speed of the board also helps with landings, which isn’t the case for many boards that have an aggressive rocker line like the CTP. The ease of control of the board translates to both edging in and landing, but the additional flex of the board is where you can really feel the difference in landings. That extra give is a great cushion for the big air that can come with the speed and the pop.

Overall, the CTP is a great board for a variety of riding levels. It’s not a board you’re going to want to take into the park, but it’s not built for that. Whether you’re just learning behind the boat or progressing on to more advanced tricks, the CTP can handle it all.
