The 2019 season of the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour started off with two familiar faces taking the victories. Nic Rapa and Sean Silveira are regularly on the podium at PWT events, and on Saturday they were the big winners in wakeboarding and wakesurfing, respectively. This puts the two Supra team riders in great position heading into the second stop at Mantura, Utah on June 22. For Nic, he’ll be looking to take his first overall PWT title after finishing second in ’17 and ’18, while Sean is set on defending his crown from last season. Check out the videos to see what each had to do to claim the top spot at the most competitive contest series in the sports.

With the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour set to start it’s 29th season, we figured it would be fun to take a look back at just how far the sport has come. It’s obvious that wakeboarding has transformed and evolved a lot over the last few decades. And as the wakes continue to get bigger, the board technology continues to improve, and the athletes continue to progress the sport, there is no limit to what can be accomplished in the future. For a side-by-side comparison between the old school and what’s current, here are two PWT winning runs, 23 years apart. One was record-breaking, while the other was groundbreaking. Check out what more than two decades of progression has accomplished.

1995 PWT – Hartford, CT
Rider: Darin Shapiro
Age: 23
Setup: Hyperlite Shapiro (directional board) 144 cm with sandal bindings
Contest Format: Two passes, 25 seconds per pass, as many tricks as possible
Judging: Points system
Boat: No weight, no tower, no speed control

Pass No. 1
Switch raley
Air half-cab roll
Hoochie glide
Melan half-cab roll
Heelside back mobe
Switch heelside back mobe

Pass No. 2
Switch krypt
Melan heelside front flip
Batwing
Switch toeside back roll to revert
Air Mode

Results: 21,570 points, 1st place, and a new world record

Pro Wakeboard Tour tricks
Back in the early days of the PWT, air tricks were common in pros’ passes. These were tricks where riders did not use the wake, instead using edge control and line tension to do flips and spins in the flats. This allowed riders to squeeze more tricks into their timed passes, thereby earning more points. Pro Wakeboard Tour

2018 PWT – Lake Norman, NC
Rider: Cory Teunissen
Age: 20
Setup: O’Brien Exclusive 136 cm with Infuse bindings
Contest Format: Two passes, four tricks per pass
Judging: Subjective system based on ranking the riders against each other
Boat: 3,500 pounds of stock ballast, FxOne Power Folding Tower, Supra Vision Control System

Pass No. 1

Pro Wakeboard Tour winning run
In today’s PWT, riders are each give two passes consisting of four tricks per pass. Scoring is done subjectively and not on a points-per-trick system. Cory Teunissen has a big bag of tricks that he can perform in a variety of ways to help set himself apart, as he did at the Mooresville, NC stop last summer. Garrett Cortese

Results: 98.67 points, 1st place, eventually his first PWT Overall title

After having finished 2nd overall the past two years on the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour, Nic Rapa is more motivated than ever heading into the 2019 season. Somehow, injuries can’t fully stop this kid. Before the final stop last year, Rapa broke his leg, but because he was sitting in the top overall spot, he battled through the pain and found a way to compete. This year, he’s looking to stay healthy and get some redemption. With new tricks under his belt and even more focus, you’d be hard pressed to bet against the Australian.

Sitting in third place, he knew he had to lay it all the line if he wanted to get the win. In the judges’ eyes, he did just that, and not only won the event, but took home the overall PWT championship as well. Now it’s your turn to be the judge. As has become the case with the most competitive professional series in the world, the riding in the finals of the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour’s third stop in Mooresville, North Carolina was unbelievable. Taking third, and ensuring another all-Australian podium, was Harley Clifford. Now it’s up to you to cast your vote as judge. Was the podium correct, or did you see things differently? The final round of the second stop of the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour was one of the most closely contested in the history of the series. Tony Iacconi, Cory Teunissen, and Nic Rapa all threw down in epic fashion and left a very unenviable task up for the judges. In fact, judge Andrew Adkison called it the toughest decision he’s ever made in a contest. That goes to show just how insane the level of riding is these days. So, do you think the judges got it right? Did Nic’s run really top Cory’s, despite Cory’s having a perfect 1080? Now is your chance to be the judge. Watch below and then cast your vote!

Watch each run above, then scroll through the poll below and choose which position you’d vote to put each rider in. Nic, Cory and Tony all killed it in the finals, let’s see what you all thought!
