The Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour entered its 28th season with a bang in Katy, Texas, just west of Houston. By taking over the brand new, private August Lakes development, riders and fans were treated to an epic lake ideal for a contest. Despite clouds, wind, and occasional spits of rain, the athletes still put down unbelievable runs, while loads of fans lined the shore to watch.

Here are five highlights that caught our eye at the first stop:

1. Nic Rapa returns to the PWT with a vengeance. Having lost the overall title in 2018 at the final stop due to injury, Rapa has come into the 2019 season more focused and determined than ever. With a new double indy tantrum in his bag of tricks, he took the top spot and got 2019 started with a bang.

2. Sean Silveira made serious work of defending his overall Pro Wakesurf Tour title from 2018. Continuing to progress his backside and switch riding, Silveira set himself apart from the competition and took a big step toward keeping his overall champion crown.

3. 2018 Rookie of the Year Tyler Higham wowed both the judges and the crowd in Katy, TX, and nearly made the podium. With a unique style to his riding, along with signature tricks, Higham continues to make his own mark on the PWT, and continues to threaten the riders at the top.

4. With a third place finish, Supra Boats team rider Shota Tezuka returned to the PWT podium for the first time since 2016. Tezuka has been training hard throughout the offseason, and it showed at this weekend’s first stop. He’s still riding the way that’s made him a fan favorite – by going huge – but he’s added tricks to his repertoire and thoroughly impressed the judges throughout the weekend.

5. Missing most of 2018 due to a knee injury, Italian Massi Piffaretti entered his first contest of the year and made it all the way to the finals. Known throughout the sport and around the world for his unique riding style, Piffaretti used creative grabs and one-of-a-kind tricks to propel him to one of his best finishes on the PWT.

Massi Piffaretti made a triumphant return
Tricks like the 3-2-1 – a frontside 360 with a rewind backside 180 – helped Massi set himself apart in his return to competitive riding. He made it all the way through the qualifying rounds on Friday to the finals on Saturday. Garrett Cortese

6. We said we had five highlights, but there was one more special one in Katy. The man on the microphone for the weekend was none other than Dan-O the Man-O, AKA the Noise of the North, AKA Danny Amir. After several years away from the PWT, Dan-O made a triumphant return. And it was extra special for him because it marked his tenth season of announcing at least one PWT event.

The 2019 season of the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour started off with two familiar faces taking the victories. Nic Rapa and Sean Silveira are regularly on the podium at PWT events, and on Saturday they were the big winners in wakeboarding and wakesurfing, respectively. This puts the two Supra team riders in great position heading into the second stop at Mantura, Utah on June 22. For Nic, he’ll be looking to take his first overall PWT title after finishing second in ’17 and ’18, while Sean is set on defending his crown from last season. Check out the videos to see what each had to do to claim the top spot at the most competitive contest series in the sports.

With the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour set to start it’s 29th season, we figured it would be fun to take a look back at just how far the sport has come. It’s obvious that wakeboarding has transformed and evolved a lot over the last few decades. And as the wakes continue to get bigger, the board technology continues to improve, and the athletes continue to progress the sport, there is no limit to what can be accomplished in the future. For a side-by-side comparison between the old school and what’s current, here are two PWT winning runs, 23 years apart. One was record-breaking, while the other was groundbreaking. Check out what more than two decades of progression has accomplished.

1995 PWT – Hartford, CT
Rider: Darin Shapiro
Age: 23
Setup: Hyperlite Shapiro (directional board) 144 cm with sandal bindings
Contest Format: Two passes, 25 seconds per pass, as many tricks as possible
Judging: Points system
Boat: No weight, no tower, no speed control

Pass No. 1
Switch raley
Air half-cab roll
Hoochie glide
Melan half-cab roll
Heelside back mobe
Switch heelside back mobe

Pass No. 2
Switch krypt
Melan heelside front flip
Batwing
Switch toeside back roll to revert
Air Mode

Results: 21,570 points, 1st place, and a new world record

Pro Wakeboard Tour tricks
Back in the early days of the PWT, air tricks were common in pros’ passes. These were tricks where riders did not use the wake, instead using edge control and line tension to do flips and spins in the flats. This allowed riders to squeeze more tricks into their timed passes, thereby earning more points. Pro Wakeboard Tour

2018 PWT – Lake Norman, NC
Rider: Cory Teunissen
Age: 20
Setup: O’Brien Exclusive 136 cm with Infuse bindings
Contest Format: Two passes, four tricks per pass
Judging: Subjective system based on ranking the riders against each other
Boat: 3,500 pounds of stock ballast, FxOne Power Folding Tower, Supra Vision Control System

Pass No. 1
Mute half-cab double back roll
Switch toeside frontside 1080
Nose grab heelside frontside 900
Switch mute crow mobe 540

Pass No. 2
Heelside backside 720 (flats)
Mute mobe 540
Crail tantrum to blind
Indy toeside double back roll

Pro Wakeboard Tour winning run
In today’s PWT, riders are each give two passes consisting of four tricks per pass. Scoring is done subjectively and not on a points-per-trick system. Cory Teunissen has a big bag of tricks that he can perform in a variety of ways to help set himself apart, as he did at the Mooresville, NC stop last summer. Garrett Cortese

Results: 98.67 points, 1st place, eventually his first PWT Overall title

After having finished 2nd overall the past two years on the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour, Nic Rapa is more motivated than ever heading into the 2019 season. Somehow, injuries can’t fully stop this kid. Before the final stop last year, Rapa broke his leg, but because he was sitting in the top overall spot, he battled through the pain and found a way to compete. This year, he’s looking to stay healthy and get some redemption. With new tricks under his belt and even more focus, you’d be hard pressed to bet against the Australian.

Highlights from the day include:

  • Nic Rapa earns the respect of fellow competitors and the crowd when it’s revealed after the event that he was competing with a fractured fibula. Nic went into the final stop with a solid lead for the overall title. Despite his injury, he not only managed to ride, but he made it to the finals. Ultimately, he couldn’t overcome it, and finished in fifth place. He still managed to finish the season in second overall with 350 total points.

  • The Pro Men’s Wakeboard podiums at Warsaw featured another Australian sweep, for both the event and for the overall PWT standings. It was further proof of just how successful the Aussie wakeboarders have become on the professional circuit, especially the PWT, which is the most competitive and longest running.

  • Cory Teunissen seals a win in Warsaw and his first overall PWT title on the last run of the day. Going off the dock, Cory knew what he needed to do to win. He threw down a flawless 1080, toeside double back roll, and double half cab roll to seal the deal and cement his place in PWT history.
