Up and coming Junior Women’s World Champion Kira Lewis started riding 6 years ago in her home state of New Jersey. She began progressing when she started riding with Amber Wing at a Malibu Rider event. From then on, Kira has progressed through the sport. In her short career, Lewis has won back to back World Titles at the 2018 WWA World Championships in Japan and at the 2019 WWA World Championships in Mexico.

This year, Kira took top honors in the Junior Pro Women’s division at the 2021 WWA Nautique Masters in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The youngster has been unstoppable winning each of the Malibu Junior Pro Tour events held so far in Utah, Texas, and Maryland. She now lives and trains in Clermont, Florida.

Take a look at the favorite wakeboarding gear of Junior Pro Women’s rising star!

This board has a rocker line designed to assist a rider in a relaxed and neutrally balanced position. It has a thinner, sharper toe side rail which makes edging-in toe side a lot easier! This board is perfect for every skill level!

Life Vest: Jet Pilot Women’s Wave Farer Comp Vest

I love my Jet Pilot Wave Farer life vest – it is lightweight and does not restrict my movement at all. Plus, the color combos are great. I have both the light blue and rust colored version.

Rope/Handle: Ronix Women’s Combo

The women’s combo from Ronix has a number of features that I love – most important for me is the smaller diameter handle at 1″. I have used this handle and rope my whole wakeboard career and I love it! it’s very long lasting and easy to grip.

The Rain Surf Suit is like a rash guard and light wetsuit combined. Not only is it super cute but it also is perfect for using under my life vest and board shorts, its so comfortable! Learn more at: rainclothingco.com.

Slovakia’s Six Time World Wakeskate Champion Zuzana Vrablova has dominated the wakeskating arena for the past decade. Find out about her choice of gear and her favorite accessories in and out of the water.

Board

So in first place I have my Water Monsters 39.5 Wakeskate. I am a big fan of this shape and I also think this size fits me well.

Fun fact, I took a photo of Andrew’s feet in the graphic of the board.

Shoes

I’ve always been using all kinds of Nike SB shoes but I guess my most favorite are Janoski. First I wear them for a little while and then I switch them for Wakeskating.

Helmet

When I ride at the cable park, I always use a helmet for safety reasons. My favorite is actually a Sandbox helmet with Red Bull branding on it.

Lifejacket

All the Follow lifejackets are so good! And if you know me, you know I also like the neoprene pants from Follow.

For Hydration

One perk of being a Red Bull Team rider is the unlimited energy drinks that I am provided. I normally drink one for some proper energy before riding.

I also bring my Wakeskate Session water jug to stay hydrated.

Sports Bra

I love my Roxy Sports Bras. They are super comfy, good for wakeskating and also pretty to hang around.

Rope and Handle

When I’m not riding at the cable park or getting towed with a winch, I use the ropes and handles from Follow for all my wakeskating sessions behind the Sea-Doo.

Personal Water Craft

No, it doesn’t fit in her bag…but Vrablova’s preferred tow is a Sea-Doo Wake Pro. It features 230 smile-inducing horsepower with addictive acceleration from the Rotax 1630. Impressive torque and great fuel economy.

Camera

I always bring my Go Pro Max waterproof camera to film my sessions and create new video edits.

Aromatherapy

Outside of the water I love using all of Dr. Bronner’s organic aromatherapy products. They are environmentally safe, smell amazingly and aren’t tested on animals.

“Earlier this year Todd Allen, Crosse Bearden, Gavin Giglio and Nick Walker flew south to Brazil looking for an escape from the cold winter season. The four rode everyday for two weeks and tried to film as much as they could. The trip was extra special for Nick Walker as he was able to complete a long outstanding goal of wakeboarding on all six possible continents with South America being his last.

This video features the four at Sunset Wake Park located in Goiania, Brazil. They credit Slingshot Wakeboards, Hyperlite Wakeboards and Ronix Wakeboards for making this trip happen for them and can’t wait to go back down. Enjoy the video!”

Take a peek at the equipment used by the 2020 Reader’s Poll favorite rider and Wake Awards Female Rider of the Year, Anna Nikstad.

The Nikstad Low Rider helmet
Nikstad Low Rider Courtesy Sandbox

Nikstad Low Rider – my signature helmet with SandBox. The classic street-style Legend Low Rider helmet in Burgundy offers a nice and low profile and is designed for all things action sports. The graphic started out as a doodle on a napkin and I’m so happy to see it come to life on my first signature helmet.

The Vale 4D Binding is Anna Nikstad's pro model
Vale 4D Binding Courtesy Liquid Force

Vale – My Pro Model wakeboard bindings with Liquid Force that combine control, comfort and stability all in one tight little boot. It’s features a 4D Flex track which lock in so nice and securely. I’ve truly never felt more comfortable and confident in my riding then when I started riding with 4D hardware. The low profile boot/binding make moving around and grabbing your board a breeze.

Pharaoh Ladies Life Jacket
Pharaoh Ladies Jacket Courtesy Follow Wakeboarding

Pharaoh – This is my Signature Life vest / impact jacket with Follow. The most comfortable jacket for female wakeboarders in the game- yes it’s the best, yes I’ll wait for anyone to say otherwise.

Timeless patterns with comfort and style in mind. This jacket is performance driven and doesn’t slack off anywhere. It has come in multiple colors over the years including army green, black, wine, burnt orange, purpled blue and khaki. It’s made to fit the female shape while still allowing for flex and movement. Again, made for and influenced by a female rider but not bound to gender roles- just ask the guys.

Virago Anna Nikstad Pro Model
Virago Courtesy Liquid Force

Virago – My Pro Model wakeboard that is it’s own new shape with the Liquid Force cable board line. It features a continuous concave channel running down the middle of the board for traction on rails, thicker side walls for durability and a soft flex pattern combined with a reinforced middle and 3 stage rocker. Coming in 4 sizes from a stealthy 137 to a flattering 152.

The Virago is a weapon and doesn’t restrain itself as “gender specific”. VIRAGANG is a force to be reckoned with.

Victress Series rails are designed for female riders
Victress Series Courtesy Unit Parktech

Victress Series – Unit Parktech approached me about 2 years ago wanting to create a female inspired line of wakepark rails. After traveling to Unit Headquarters and working with their team – the Victress Series was born. The Victress Series is made up of 3 rails designed by myself and two fellow female athletes: Anne Freyer and Maryh Rougier. We each made our own wakepark rail to make up the line.

My rail is a double sided bank, with double sided creeper ledges all lined up with a thick hand-rail inspired pipe running through the middle. The banks and creepers tapper off towards the end exposing the mass of the handrail and providing a nice little drop to the water. It’s everything I love about rails all combined into one.

Pharaoh Boardshorts for women
Pharaoh Boardshorts Courtesy Follow Wakeboarding

Pharaoh Boardshorts – the Follow women’s boardshorts that protect. Soft neoprene outer layer with a reinforced spandex layer just beneath, that way you don’t have to worry about picking any wedgies out while you’re riding. Coming in two colors brown and black. It checks yourself before you wreck yourself.

Changing Poncho for lounging off the water
Changing Poncho Courtesy VIVIDA Lifestyle

Changing Poncho – probably the most frequently used item in my board bag. My VIVIDA Lifestyle changing poncho is clutch every time I ride. It’s long enough to keep you covered up and has hand holes on the sides for easy maneuvering. It’s hooded and cozy for any weather or climate. I use this poncho on so many occasions I can’t even begin to list them.

Sleep mask for relaxing
Silky Sleep Mask Courtesy VIVIDA Lifestyle

Silky sleep mask – another clutch item from VIVIDA Lifestyle is my super comfy – silky sleep mask. It travels with me everywhere I go. This sleep mask is exactly what you need for long haul trips, or if you’re just trying to catch some shut-eye on a sunny day. I’ve used this on planes, trains, cars, hammocks, beaches, classrooms, grassy knolls – you name it.

It’s padded so it feels like you have a pillow on your face and the silky fabric keeps you feeling nice and clean.

Mary Morgan Howell https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/story/howto/mary-morgan-howell-new-it-girl/ Thu, 13 May 2021 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=53078 Wakeboarding’s New “It” Girl

The post Mary Morgan Howell appeared first on Wakeboarding Mag.

At the 2020 WWA World Wakeboarding Championships, seventeen-year-old Mary Morgan Howell earned her spot amongst the greats when she defeated World Champions Dallas Friday, Bec Gange and veteran pro Tarah Mikacich finishing in second place a few points behind defending champion Meagan Ethell.

The native from Dothan, Alabama, started the year by winning the Last Chance Masters Qualifier (LCMQ) and finished the season with a bang winning the Fan Vote at the Moxie Pro Series. As the most popular rider, Mary Morgan walked away with the coveted sponsorship contract becoming the new Body Glove Girl.

Humble and sweet, the Christian teenager was first introduced to the lake life by her father, a hard-working orthodontist, who pulled her on the inner tube in Compass Lake, Florida, where he owns a house an hour away from home.

“My dad first strapped me on a wakeboard when I was 6 years old. I have NO recollection of it at all. I honestly don’t know life without it. It’s always been there. When I was 8, my dad entered me into my first INT tournament. I can remember being so nervous standing on the dock waiting for my turn to come!”.

As a ten-year-old, the young gun shocked herself and the crowd when she landed her first invert (a front roll) during a competition.

“When I was 10, I did my first WWA competition. I think that was really when I fell in love with the sport and felt led to dedicate my life to wakeboarding”.

By age eleven, she started homeschooling so she could focus on daily practice and travel.

“In order to further my training and allow me to have some travel flexibility, my parents decided to homeschool me. In my house, school always comes first, so the deal was: Get your work done first, then go ride. Talk about some motivation (lol).”

Her dad planted the seeds of self-discipline by example and has been her main supported and boat pilot from day one.

“He gets up early in the morning and pulls me no matter what!” She gushes at her father’s commitment and dedication, which included almost stalking former World Champion Andrew Adkison until he agreed to become Mary Morgan’s personal coach. Adkison has been her coach ever since, he’s helped her build a strong and solid foundation by keeping her safe from injuries with his amazing coaching skills.

Ronix Wakeboards began to support her with equipment when she turned twelve.

Mary Morgan turned pro in 2018, when asked how it feels to become the new Body Glove Girl she humbly says, “That was definitely cool! To be named the new Body Glove Girl is an absolute dream. I think Body Glove is an amazing company, and I couldn’t be more honored to join the family. I am so looking forward to meeting everyone, and hopefully make lifelong friendships.”

Mary Morgan Howell at Compass Lake
Her outstanding lean and strong physique comes from a devotion to hard work in and out of the water. Her regime includes working out, stretching and healthy nutrition. Courtesy Mary Morgan Howell

“I truly believe how you train and fuel your body off the water is pivotal to your performance on the water. I have definitely found that to be true in my own life. As far as nutrition goes, I always try to eat foods that fuel me and make my body feel good for training. This looks different for every person, because everybody is unique. Find what works for you and stick with it! As far as training off the water, I do a combination of Yoga, Pilates and strength training.”

The world traveler feels extremely grateful for all the experiences her wakeboarding career has brought.

“I’ve had the privilege of traveling to Mexico, Peru, Canada, Australia, Portugal, and Japan. Also, I’ve traveled to many amazing places right here in the US!”

So far, her favorite traveling anecdote has been in Japan:

“The 2018 WWA World Championships in Japan was seriously an experience I will never forget. Honestly, it is probably within my top 3 favorite moments of my life…

  1. The Ramen was absolutely out of this world. It 100% made me a Ramen snob and I’m totally ok with it.
  2. The people were so kind and fun. They were always ready to help in any way they could.
  3. Everywhere was SQUEAKY clean.
  4. You could be anywhere, and just stand in awe of the beauty that Japan had to offer. It was amazing.
  5. The culture shock I experienced was so cool. Most of the time, we couldn’t tell whether we were eating food on our plate or if it was some kind of decoration. We were required to wear robes to dinner and take off our shoes at the table. I got to perform with a Japanese boy band and sing karaoke with a Japanese Pop star.

This experience is one I will hold onto forever! I hope I get the chance to go back one day! “

Mary Morgan’s strong faith inspires her to uplift others. “It is not about me” she says, “My faith is the most important thing to me. I love Jesus with my whole heart. He gives me the strength I need every day on and off the water. He gives me peace, and he’s my comforter. I just want to live for Jesus. I want to be the light that people need. I want other people to know and experience His love, because I honestly don’t know where I’d be without it. I pray for the wakeboard community daily that we’d all feel Gods loving presence, because he loves each and every one of us so much.”

She feels mostly inspired by her father, “My dad inspires me more than anyone in the world. There has not been one time in my 12 years of riding that he hasn’t been ready to take me wakeboarding. No matter what, he is always there for me. I could never put into words how thankful I am that God gave me such an amazing dad. I 100% would not be where I am as a wakeboarder or a person without him. He has taught me drive, commitment, efficiency, perseverance, and of course how to back a boat trailer, ha-ha.”

Her advice to those who are getting into wakeboarding: “Remember to never compare yourself to others. God has made you who you are for a specific purpose. He made you absolutely perfect, with no mistakes. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and I think it’s so beautiful when we can appreciate and be inspired by others strengths.”

Mary Morgan Howell is off to Rollins College
By next Fall, the eighteen-year-old plans to move to Winter Park, Florida, where she is enrolled as a freshman at the prestigious Rollins College. Courtesy Mary Morgan Howell

“I’m working on lots of big things for the 2021 season. I CAN’T WAIT!! I don’t have the opportunity to ride much cable in Alabama, but when I move to Orlando, I’d love to get some cable riding in more often!”

The newcomer to the Wakeboarding Mecca will miss her two dogs Ollie and Fin, whom she loves more than anything, but we have a feeling the sky is the limit for the beautiful girl who will finally get the opportunity to get filmed, ride and mingle with our sports best.

“My family makes me so happy. They are the best! I’m so thankful for the way they love and support me.”

This past weekend kicked-off the first stop of the Malibu WWA Rider Experience Series in St. George, Utah.

Taking place at the scenic Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, wakeboarders and wakesurfers alike gathered at Quail Creek Reservoir for the West Regional Championships hosted by Taylor’s Boats. And while the Malibu Rider Experience events have been happening since 2013, this year marked the inaugural year for three divisions to be included on the tournament schedule.

From the wakesurfing-side of the sport, “Wakesurfing Moms” and “Wakesurfing Dads” each had their own brand new divisions that were filled with first-time competitors. Many parents who usually only show up to watch and support their children took the opportunity to get off the sidelines and into the action. “The WWA’s mission is to introduce people to the wake sports we love. We feel that this introduction can come in many forms and should be in a fun, safe, friendly environment. And let’s be honest, we all know that without the support of parents we would have no one on the water. So we wanted to create a few divisions for those parents that also love wake sports and have them compete against other parents. This has become my favorite division for the year It’s all about having fun right?” said Shannon Starling, president of the WWA.

Also brand new for the 2021 season, Malibu has added the Jr. Pro Women to each event of the Jr. Pro Series. Both the Jr. Pro Men and the Jr. Pro women will be accumulating points throughout the 5 stops of the Malibu Jr. Pro Series to compete for $20,000 in travel scholarships that will be divided equally among the top overall series finishers. Overall winners will be announced and scholarship money will be awarded at the final stop of the Malibu Rider Experience Series, happening in conjunction with TN WakeFest in Smithville, TN on July 23-25.

With a win in 2020, Nic Rapa joined an elite list of back-to-back Pro Wakeboard Tour champions. Garrett Cortese

Thanks to COVID-19′s far-reaching effects around the world, the 2020 season of the Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour was unlike any other, by a long shot. While the cancellation of live, in-person events was a bummer for athletes and fans alike, it opened the doors to an entirely new way to conduct PWT contests: virtually. For the first three stops of the season, the top riders were required to film their own six-trick lines (no falls allowed, and no editing/cutting). These runs were posted for both fans and official PWT judges to score. It allowed fans both an up-close look at some of the most progressive riding in the sport, as well as the opportunity to have a say in determining the winner. The results were positive, despite the extreme changes. Kudos to Supra for coming up with the format and living up to the mantra of “the show must go on.”

For the fourth and final stop of the year, Supra was able to safely organize and hold a live event (albeit without any crowds/fans). This allowed the riders one chance at a traditional contest format: each competitor riding the same boat, in the same conditions, under the same pressure. Thanks to some incredible riding in the first three virtual stops, Nic Rapa, the defending 2019 PWT champ, had the overall points lead heading into Stop 4. In the end he pulled through with a victory, sealing deal and allowing him to hold onto the crown. Now that he’s back home in Australia for another endless summer, we caught up with the two-time PWT champ to get his thoughts on the unique season.

2020 PWT overall winners
The 2020 PWT Overall Podium: 1. Nic Rapa; 2. Cory Teunissen; 3. Tyler Higham Garrett Cortese

For you, what’s the biggest difference, or the hardest thing to overcome, between live, in-person events and filming for the virtual/digital events?

At a live event everyone rides the same wake same conditions and the winner is whoever is the best on the day. Digital events are a whole different animal. Any rider can be anywhere, riding any wake, and there are so many variables! It made it very interesting!

What was it like trying to come up with runs for the virtual stops of the PWT this year?

It’s definitely tough. I knew what I wanted to do each time, but dealing with Florida weather and the variables it got a little trying at times!

Which stop took you the longest to put a full line together?

Stop 3. I was out in the boat filming my run until 20 minutes before it was due for submission! That was crazy.

The progression throughout the season, especially between you and Cory constantly adding tricks, was crazy. Do you think we would have seen that if the season had been all standard, live events?

I think every year the tricks are getting crazier and more advanced regardless of the format. Obviously, with the video-based format, we were allowed as many attempts as we needed to get our lines done, so this allowed for some really cool parts. We definitely stayed busy and got it done!

Was it hard transitioning back to in-person style event for the 4th stop?

For me, no, it felt great. I had had other events throughout the year that kept the normal contest feel there for me, it was just a matter of staying focused and landing what I knew I needed to.

Does winning the overall title this year mean anything different to you because it was such a different type of year?

It feels great. With the digital events being tough and different I’m pumped to overcome that – and it’s even better to go back-to-back with the overall PWT title last year.

Since it started in 1992, the only male riders to repeat as overall champs on the PWT are Darin Shapiro, Parks Bonifay, Phil Soven and Harley Clifford. What’s it mean to you to be amongst names like that?

Wow. Reading that gives me chills. That’s epic! It gives me a sense of belonging and like I got introduced to wakeboarding for a reason. I’m very humbled, for sure.

What are your plans for the winter back home in Australia?

Well it’s summer here, so I’m enjoying more warm weather, haha! I have been catching up with friends, family and having fun back on my board. Life’s good!

What can fans look forward to from you in 2021?

I’m always working on becoming the best version of me, both on and off the water! I’m stoked to keep progressing and pushing the limits. We’ll see if we can go for the three-peat!

Video by Shane Bonifay

At just 15, Fynn Bullock is quickly making a name for himself amongst the ranks of professional wakeboarding, not to mention snowboarding. The multi-talented board rider has been killing it the last couple years, topping it off with Rookie of the Year honors in the 2020 Supra Boats Pro Wakeboard Tour. Not to mention, he’s arguable as skilled in park riding as he is behind the boat.

Fynn spent some time filming with another all-around wake legend, Shane Bonifay, to film an edit that showcased his skills. The results are here, in “Who Is Fynn Bullock?” Take a few minutes and watch this madness, it answers the question of the title pretty emphatically.

October 1 marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness month, something Meagan Ethell–the 6x Wake Awards Best Female Rider winner–has been passionate about for several years. In a continued effort to bring more awareness to the cause, Meagan and Red Bull partnered with Philadelphia’s iconic Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River to create a series of unique and very pink images.

Inspired by having seen the area lit up pink for breast cancer awareness in the past, Meagan and Red Bull worked with the city of Philadelphia and WeCanRow Philly, a community of breast cancer survivors aiming to help those affected regain their activity and energy levels to light the boathouses pink and create an up-rail out of a rowing scull. Meagan also was inspired by her visit to the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club (PGRC), which helps promote, stimulate, and support among women an interest in amateur rowing and other forms of athletics.

With a custom, pink-ribbon Red Bull helmet created just for the photo shoot, Meagan made some iconic images in epic fashion, earning her the latest Cover Up feature. The 22-year old Orlando native has worked to raise money, awareness, and help survivors of breast cancer for years, including as a spokeswoman for Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), and teaching survivors in her hometown how to wakeboard every year. Those interested in standing by Meagan as she works to support, advocate, and eradicate this deadly disease can do so by donating to Boarding for Breast Cancer, or by joining B4BC’s 13th annual ‘Skate the Coast’ event on October 25th, and encouraging your community to skate, bike, or roll around your neighborhood for Breast Cancer Prevention. B4BC also encourages those participants to tag @b4bc and #feelinit4b4bc to continue their goal. Additionally, Meagan and B4BC will be auctioning off her helmet to raise money for the cause, with Red Bull matching the donation.
