At an elite level and competing all over the world, towed watersports are sure to have some compelling moments. This year’s Nautique WWA National Championships presented by GM Marine spilled over with interesting moments and Olympic-like storylines. The event took place July 25-28, 2024 at Lake Tye, Monroe, WA, USA.

Leading up to the weekend-plus of WWA competition, there was hype surrounding Nautique waterman Noah Flegel and his quest to compete in a total of 6 different divisions. Hype might not be the right word as it sometimes carries connotations of overpromise or undeservedness. “Very real anticipation for what Flegel is capable of,” might be a better way to say it. Smart money had him taking at least one or two of the foil and/or surf divisions and making the finals in most, but how would he stay on his game over 4 days of competing?

  • Pro Wakeskate: 2nd place
  • Pro Men Wakeboard: 6th place (made finals)
  • Pro Men Foil: 1st place
  • Pro Men Foil (straps): 1st place
  • Pro Men Surf: 1st place
  • Pro Men Skim: 3rd place

That totals 14 rides, 6 finals, 5 podiums and 3 wins at one event.

Arguably the most competitive division was his own worst placing of the weekend, but could be the most impressive. Pro Men Wakeboard has been reaching a level that even the 2024 champion, and very good friend of Flegel, Cory Teunissen states, “it has really gotten out of control. I did 2 doubles, a BS 9, no falls and got 3rd in the qualifying heat.”

Teunissen knows a thing or about what it takes to succeed in this environment, stay healthy, recover from injuries, and maintain the mental aspect to be in the top echelon. “For years it used to be 2 or 3 guys you could really count on taking out an event but now it is really the majority of the field. It has really tightened up, especially over the last couple of years. We are seeing the most polished and most technical display of wakeboarding the sport has ever seen and it is only going to grow to be even better.”

Zahra Kell wakeboarding

On the Pro Women Wakeboard side, the pre-event favorites were Zahra Kell and Meagan Ethell, but a concussion before the event put Kell’s status in question. Being in the hospital four days before leaving for Seattle, she decided to travel to the event and tone down her passes to avoid back edge catches. A testament to how deep her bag of tricks is, Kell had enough to take the win. A large part of that drive comes down to falling back in love with the sport. Her father/coach and legend in the wakeboarding community Scotty Kell sentimentally shared, “I’m soooo stoked to see that she is loving it. I love when I’m pulling her and it’s windy or rolly but she is smiling.” Surely seeing her smile at the top of the podium and being able to recover from the head knock had to stoke him out even more.

Pro Skim slayer Jett Lambert continues to be unbeatable and staved off some heavy hitters to take the Eagle trophy.

**14 Divisions Determine Winners at Day Two of

Nautique WWA National Championships**

West Chester, OH. — Day two of the Nautique WWA National Championships presented by Rockstar Energy Drink saw 14 divisions name overall winners during a full-slate of action at Voice of America Park in West Chester. Also, highlighting the second day of action at the country’s largest wakeboarding competition were the sport’s future stars in the Junior Pro Men Division taking to the lake in a jaw-dropping display of progressive riding in six stacked quarterfinal heats.

Among the standouts claiming national titles today were Chad Lowe in the Pro Veterans division, Lee Wagner in Men’s I and Tim Pitschke in Men’s II.

“I’m stoked to get the win and help keep the division growing as the sport gets older,” said Chad Lowe, Pro Veterans national champion. “There are a lot of the original pros out there in their thirties now and this division is a great way to keep them active in the sport. The venue is incredible for the event and the G23’s wake is one of the best I’ve ever ridden.”

Also launching off the massive wake from Nautique’s G23 were the athletes in the ultra-competitive Junior Pro Men’s division. Fresh off a Pro Tour season title, Mike Dowdy kept his hot streak alive with a run that was equal parts precision and style. Mixing huge aerials with technical rail tricks, Dowdy posted a perfect 100-point score and advances to tomorrow’s semifinals.

The Nautique WWA National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will continue through Sunday, Aug. 5. Saturday and Sunday are a ticketed event. Tickets are available at the gate: $13 (adult); $5 (ages 6-12); free (ages 5 and under).

Following Sunday’s finals fans can enjoy the Sony Big Air Contest. Featuring the top Pro Men riders, the athletes perform massive tricks that are rarely attempted in a traditional contest setting.

In addition to all the action on the water, on land the Nautique WWA National Championships features great food and music, athlete autograph signings, chances to win freebies, and shopping from the most cutting-edge brands offering water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.

**Wakeboarding’s Largest U.S. Contest Kicks Off Day One at

Nautique WWA National Championships**

West Chester, OH. — For the first-time in its 23-year history Wakeboarding’s largest U.S. contest, the Nautique WWA National Championships presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, is being held in Ohio. Day one of the prestigious event saw 15 different divisions take to the Lake at Voice of America Park in West Chester as riders battled it out for the title of National Champion.

One of the most competitive divisions during day one came from the Junior Men, which saw 16 riders in three stacked heats. Separating himself from the talented pack was Justin Lee, who linked together a run that included a handful of big airs to post a division high-score of 85.00.

“We couldn’t be happier bringing Nationals to West Chester, Ohio for the first time,” said Chris Bischoff, competition director. “The venue is perfect for an event of this magnitude and the crowd saw some excellent riding today.”

Also dazzling the crowd today were the riders in Mens I and II. In division I, Curt Bernstein looks to be the early favorite after putting in a well-balanced run full of airs and stylish riding, while posting a score of 68.33 to take first in his heat. In division II, Nick Link looked equally impressive with a polished run that judges rewarded with a heat winning score of 70.00.

The Nautique WWA National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will continue through Sunday, Aug. 5. Tomorrow free event will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will remain a ticketed event. Clifford, Wing & Roberts Win Pro Titles at Nautique WWA Nationals

Minneapolis, Minn. – Fans lined the shores of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis today to catch the final rounds of action at the 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. Throughout the day riders in five different divisions hit the water to compete for national titles and invitations to represent the United States at this year’s WWA Wakeboard World Championships next month.

The Pro Men’s division highlighted the event, with its five-man final consisting of wakeboarding heavyweights Rusty Malinoski, Bob Soven, Aaron Rathy, Harley Clifford and Phillip Soven.

All five pros threw down impressive runs, but defending champion Harley Clifford made the biggest impact on the water to take home his second straight win at the Nautique WWA Nationals. Former national champion Phillip Soven took second place, while younger brother Bob Soven rounded out the podium, respectively.

“I’m pretty stoked to win Nationals,” said Clifford. “Phil and I have been neck and neck all season, so it feels good to come out with a win today.”

With today’s win, Clifford overtakes Soven for the lead in the King of Wake series.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on defending champion Nicola Butler to see if the 19-year-old standout could repeat in today’s finals. But Amber Wing’s hot streak continued to finish No. 1 in the contest.

Today’s victory marks Wing’s fourth straight win the Queen of Wake series and her third Nautique WWA Nationals win.

The mighty Mississippi River served as a level playing field today in the Pro Wakeskate division finals, as Grant Roberts upset three former national champions in route of his first-ever national title. The 21-year-old Discovery Bay, Calif. native posted a score of 83.33 during his winning run. Brian Grubb and Stuart Shinn rounded out the podium, respectively.

The Jr. Pro Men’s division hit the water today for their six-man final with Shota Tezuka taking first place with a score of 81.67, a six-point differential from the next closest competitor. Mike Dowdy and Kyle Evans rounded out the Jr. Pro Men division podium, respectively.

Also honored today was 13-year-old Taylor McCullough, who took home the PCM Amateur Best Trick Award. McCullough won the $250 cash prize for landing a massive Tantrum to Fakie during her winning run in the Girls division finals.

With the Nautique WWA Nationals all wrapped up, the top tier riders from each of the 23 divisions will be invited to represent the United States at the 2011 WWA Wakeboard World Championships next month.

The 2011 Nautique WWA Nationals will also air on the VERSUS television network at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Pros Hit the Water at the 2011 Nautique WWA Nationals

Minneapolis, Minn. – The largest water-sport contest in the United States continued today in downtown Minneapolis, as the 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink hosted preliminary rounds for its pro divisions. Riders in the Pro Men, Pro Women and Pro Wakeskate categories spent the day battling it out on the Mississippi River for the few remaining spots in tomorrow’s final rounds of action.

First off the dock today was the Pro Wakeskate division, where eight competitors squared off in two heats of four during today’s semifinal round. Among the eight competing pros was the division’s 2010 runner-up Grant Roberts, who posted a 76.67 to win his heat and advance to tomorrow’s finals.

“I got lucky; the water was super rollie and it took a lot of people down,” Roberts joked about his heat today. “The water has been pretty rough to everyone, but I managed to land a couple of 3’s and a Big Spin today, and made it through to the finals.”

Roberts hopes his luck won’t run out during tomorrow’s finals, as he’ll be competing against Brian Grubb, Stuart Shinn and Reed Hansen – all former national champions.

“The final heat is going to be crazy,” said Roberts. “All these guys are really talented. I just hope the water conditions help level the playing field.”

The 21-year-old Discovery Bay, Calif. native will look to win his first Pro Wakeskate national title during tomorrow’s finals, scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

In the Pro Men’s division, local rider Colin Ryan turned heads today, when the St. Paul, Minn. resident placed third in his six-man quarterfinal heat – good enough to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals. The part-time pro wakeboarder and full-time anesthesiology certification student credits his success today to his approach.

“I have a lot of respect for these guys; they’re the best in the world,” said Ryan. “But since I just wakeboard part time, I really have nothing to lose. I just lay it all on the line, go big and see what happens.”

Ryan’s family and friends will be on site tomorrow to watch him compete in the Pro Men semifinals, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Should Ryan win the national title tomorrow, he will become the first Minnesota native to win the Pro Men’s division national title.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on Alexa Score to see if the Spicer, Minn. native could advance to the final round of the competition in her home state. But the rough water conditions that have plagued the competition took Score down early, eliminating her from the finals.

“The water conditions were pretty rough and I just don’t have the experience yet to handle that, like some of the other girls do,” said Score, who turned pro earlier this year. “But I had a lot of local support and I hope even more people come out to watch the rest of the competition tomorrow.”

The only pro division to crown a national champion today was the Pro Women’s Wakeskate category, when Jen GilanFarr took first place in today’s finals to win her fourth national title.

The Nautique WWA Nationals will conclude tomorrow, July 31, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m.

The 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink is free to the public during all five days of competition. Strong Current Challenges Wakeboarders to Adapt at Nautique WWA Nationals

Minneapolis, Minn. – The top wakeboarders in the United States took to the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis today to continue vying for national titles at the 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. While all of today’s five skill-level divisions competed on the same body of water, the Jr. Pro Men’s category was forced to alter their traditional competition format, due to the strong current of the mighty Mississippi.

“It was really different and really challenging,” said Jr. Pro Men’s division rider Daniel Powers. “We had to do all wake tricks, which was difficult because the water was so choppy.”

Jr. Pro Men riders, like Powers, normally have to incorporate rail-based tricks on floating pieces of apparatus, in addition to their wake-based tricks, during their competition run. But the strength of the River’s current forced tournament officials to remove the apparatus from the water, as equipment safety anchors could not be secured.

“We tried multiple times to set the anchors, but they refused to remain in place,” said Chief Judge Chris Bischoff. “If the anchors aren’t secure then the equipment isn’t safe, and we’re not willing to put our competitors at risk like that. They’ll just have to adapt to an all wake format.”

The 12 riders in the Jr. Pro Men’s division were split into three heats of four during today’s semifinal round, with only the top two riders from each heat advancing onto Sunday’s finals.

Powers, who is featured in the August issue of Sports Illustrated and was projected to be one of the division’s finalists, saw an early exit from the competition today, due to several uncharacteristic falls.

“It was really rollie out there; pretty much everyone was falling,” said Powers. “It is what it is, but I wish I did better.”

Among the division’s six finalists are Jacob Valdez, Freddie Wayne, Mike Dowdy, Kyle Evans, Gordon Harrison and Shota Tezuka. The six-man final for the division’s national title is scheduled for Sunday, July 31 at 9:30 a.m.

The Nautique WWA Nationals will continue with several other divisions tomorrow, July 30, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.

The 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink is free to the public during all five days of competition. McCullough Captures Fourth Consecutive Title as Nautique WWA Nationals Wrap Up 11 Divisions

Minneapolis, Minn. – The quest to become the best wakeboarder in the United States ended for some today, as the 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink wrapped up 11 of its 23 divisions. The top wakeboarding talent in the country gathered today on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis to vie for their respective division’s national title.

Among the 11 champions crowned today was 13-year-old Taylor McCullough, who claimed her fourth consecutive national title in the Girls division – the second highest amount of repeated wins, of any division, at the Nautique WWA Nationals. The only other rider to win more consecutive national titles is legendary female pro wakeboarder Dallas Friday, with five straight wins.

“It’s pretty cool to win four contests in row like that; not many people can do that,” said McCullough. “It’s fun to be pushed by the other girls to be a better rider and to win.”

Despite choppy water conditions and a fall during an attempted Heelside 540, the Centralia, Ill. native posted a score of 78.33 to best Shelby King and Sofia Dinatale in the three-woman final.

McCullough attributes her near record-breaking win today to her coach Mike Ferraro.

“I’ve been riding everyday and training with Mike Ferraro,” said McCullough. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s cool to see it pay off.”

Coincidently, Ferraro has also coached national title record-holder Dallas Friday.

McCullough, along with the other 10 national titlists, will now represent the United States at the 2011 WWA World Championships next month.

The Nautique WWA Nationals will continue tomorrow, July 29, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.

2011 Nautique WWA Nationals Opens in Minneapolis with New Adaptive Division

Minneapolis, Minn. – The top wakeboarding talent in the United States gathered today on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis to kick off the 22nd annual Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. The five-day event, which concludes on Sunday, July 31, opened with semifinal rounds for 11 of its 23 divisions, as riders from around the country began their quest to claim the national title.

While today’s opening rounds saw several national titlists return to the water to begin defending their class crowns, three new faces turned out to compete in the competition’s newest category – Adaptive Standing.

Adaptive Standing is a division at the Nautique WWA Nationals, open to wake athletes with limb loss and limb difference.

“We’re all pretty stoked that they added Adaptive Standing to this event,” said competitor Mike Schultz. “It’s all about having fun, and at the end of it, if I can say I’m the national champion, that’s even better.”

Schultz, 29, of Pillager, Minn. may be competing for his first national title for wakeboarding this week, but “Monster Mike” is no stranger to competition. In fact, since Dec. 16, 2008, when his left leg was amputated above the knee, Schultz has won three X Games gold medals for Adaptive Snocross and Adaptive Super-X, plus several other titles and trophies.

“Action sports are fun, they’re fast and I love doing them,” said Schultz.

The 2009 ISOC True Grit Award winner took second place in his semifinal heat today behind Billy Tonis. But Schultz will look to bounce back in tomorrow’s finals to claim the Adaptive Standing division’s first-ever national title.

The Adaptive Standing division will host its finals tomorrow, July 28 at 10 a.m.

The Nautique WWA Nationals will start tomorrow at 8 a.m. and wrap up at 4 p.m.

The 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink is free to the public during all five days of competition. For those who cannot attend the event in person, just “like” the King of Wake’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/prowakeboardtour) to watch all the live streaming footage.

The 2011 Nautique WWA Nationals will also air on the VERSUS television network at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
